I have just purchased a 2nd hand yamaha pw motor and I need to test it. I cannot afford to buy the over priced battery right now and I refuse to pay the asking price for a yamaha charger so I have bought a generic 42v 2amp charger and I just wanted to confirm the wire colours as I intend to connect it directly to the motor just to test it and the controller. Please can someone who knows what they are talking about help confirm that red is positive and black is negative and what the grey wire is. I don't want to damage the motor....see attached picture.

I have looked at the service manual and it doesn't label any of the wires.

Thanks in advance

The yamaha system uses comms between the battery and controller, which is what the grey wire is for. You can't make it work without a Yamaha battery unless you replace the motor controller with a standard dumb one.

There is a lot of good info about it here:

Thank you for the reply. That's annoying. Do you know where I might be able to find a wiring diagram for the motor and battery. I intend to solder my own 4 pin yamaha compatible connector onto my generic charger. I don't like being ripped off by these companies.

You can't use a different charger on a Yamaha battery for the same reason. There is a way that involves using an Arduino to send the correct code. You can also use that to fool the controller into using any battery. All details are on the German Pedelecs forum, where there are wiring diagrams and code for the Arduino.

As vfr has said the Yamaha uses CANbus/handshaking between display, battery, controller & motor, like Brose, Bosch, Shimano and others you are tied to expensive in house spares. Non of these can use off the shelf generic components unless one is an electronics wizard/programmer who can back engineer the software.

Georgehenry a couple of years ago had a battery docking issue with a broken discharge connector, Yamaha dealer simply told him nothing doing new battery needed £700's please. He walked away and with his mate repair it for pittance.

It's shocking really considering what we pay for these bikes to start with. I've seen an ebay seller that sells generic charger and connector that they guarantee to work with the yamaha batteries. After hours of reading I've actually managed to source the connector they use but I just don't know how to wire it up correctly. The parts list comes to no more than £30.
