I think i can see a sensor there, still intact.
Using finger and thumb, with the bike switched off, twiddle the black disk back and forth whilst pushing it towards the bike frame. It should move along the shaft with a little effort and rotation.

Hi Juicy.
I think the sensor is sheared off. I've tried to take a better pic. I now remember when the bike arrived that the chain was off the wheel and snared between the sensor wheel and pedal. It was a mess. I must have torn the sensor off when freeing it.Broken sensor.jpg

To check that the pas works turn the bike upside down and remove the sensor, with the system on hold the sensor close to the magnets and spin the pedals you should then here and feel the system kick in. Usually there is a red signal light that flashes on and off as it senses.
The sensor (rhs looking at the pic) which has the wires coming from it looks to be to far from the magnet ring, for the pas to operate the sensor needs to be aprrox 1 - 5 mm from the magnet ring. Three things don't quite look right, someone has tried to bend the sensor, it looks like it is out of the scope of the magnets to also pick up and also looks like some one has try to repair it. You may have to get one .
or make up a new sensor ring to mount on the bike to get it nearer.
You need a pas sensor offset mounting bracket like this.

Thanks for your help Nealh. I missed your reply when you posted earlier. I've ordered a new sensor from eBikesDirect - I seem to have damaged the original one when trying to free the chain Broken sensor.jpg

Ah well. Just a few pounds gets you up and running again. You may be able to unscrew what remains of the old sensor from its bracket and then screw the new one on into place without having to remove the chain wheel. That sensor is probably held in place with just one small screw.

Fingers X'd that's the case.
I have learned that the man who's carrying out the service and repair of my bike is also a Pedelecs forum member who has assembled his own machines so I think I'm in the best hands.

The replacement sensor should be here either today or tomorrow (the sensor is definitely sheared off). It's going to be replaced during a service so any problems should be sorted then.
I'll do an update when I get the bike back.
Thanks for the help. :)
