Grease.

Featured Replies

The motor on my old Powabyke is getting a bit noisy. It sounds like a milk float. When I first got it, nearly a year ago, I stripped it down and greased the gears, which are steel. I think that the grease I used was a bir too light. Does anyone have a recommendation for a heavier grease that would be more suitable please?

Hi Neptune

For most normal general purpose jobs involving bearings / gears

I use Castrol LM grease, it's lithium based high melting point and a 500g pot should last years and years and years, lol (I think it was originally designed for use in wheel bearings)

@timidtom. In the case of the grease I used last time, I would have to disagree. I think, actually, the film is breaking down due to the excessive pressure between adjacent gear teeth, and that is why I am looking for a heavier grease with a better, stronger, film.:)

My daughters used to watch the film "Grease" over and over again. It was never the same for me after I found that John Revolting was a member of a weird cult that believe in Lizards from Venus.

I wonder whats more weird people who believe in Lizards from Venus, or people that believe in a omnipotent power ? I hate Grease, but not John Tralvota.

Neptune you can either visit a Garden Centre or a Motorcycle Dealer , the latter may be more up your street ! Look at Motul Tech Grease 300 , a multi purpose semi-synthetic complex lithium NLG1 2 for extreme pressure . It must be good as it`s a tenner for a 200 gm tube . Lithium Multi purpose grease for a Husqvarna Strimmer gearbox sounds yummy too ! A tenner for 250ml . As suggested , Castrol LM would be ok too . I`ve had a tin for years and it`s been used in my Scooter and Motorcycle wheel bearings and head races , bolts , torque arms etc .
Olivia Newton John was certainly lusted after in my yoof. Those leggings ... ;)

As a Powabyke owner myself I used Castrol Lm on the gears in my hub, however I found this to be the best solution to the noise.

Just spat out my Horlicks ... think my VHS version is still intact even if the player has long since died. Far harder-wearing ... than the Betamax that is, not the leggings !

I often wondered if those leggings were sprayed on

That would be an 80s teenage boys' dream ;) Flashdance got the .. er .. pulse racing though ...

Olivia Neutron-Bomb, the aptly nicknamed John Revolting, Flashdance....it's amazing how one little 6-letter word can conjure up all those images out of a question about quietening down a noisy geared motor.

Many years ago when I worked on some real, heavy engineering projects, I discovered that there's some fantastic science behind modern oils and grease. Semi-synthetic materials provided bespoke lubrication in many applications, extending service life and reducing maintenance. In more recent times, we have seen moves towards fully synthetic oils, indeed many cars nowadays run on those modern oils from new.

As for the application required by the OP, I agree with others that Castrol LM is probably about as good as it gets for an off-the-shelf product. It will provide optimum lubrication without creating additional drag. As for sound-deadening, my advice would be to use a direct-drive, hub-motor bike instead! ;)

Panasonic crank-drives are almost silent too but I digress.......

Movies are far more interesting than the properties of lubricants and although I have never been a big fan of Bond films, I went to see Skyfall last night and came away thinking it was the best Bond film ever! Sam Mendez, the director, has remained faithful to the style of the previous films so the model is pretty much what one might expect. He has managed to modernise here and there and has also introduced one or two new characters who, I'm certain. will feature in future Bond films. It's a really well done action movie, true to the genre for the most part and, I think, very watchable.

Can't wait for the next one!

Agree.. I think the film is great - especially so on the Big Screen. Bonus trivia for the day .. the bit where he drives into the car park after MI6 building is blown up was filmed at Great Suffolk Street Warehouse (i.e. Car Park !), scene of the odd weekend party or two in slightly more recent days gone by .. ;)

I saw Grease, but I've never seen a Bond film. I wonder if I'm the only one.

Very valid point. Both are equally as bizarre.

Back in the 1940s Ron L Hubbard was a writer of science fiction. In one of his stories, the hero says, "If you want to become really rich, start your own religion." or words to that effect. He went on to follow his own advice, and the rest, as they say, is history.

As an atheist, I think people are entitled to believe whatever they wish. But I always say that religion is like an erection. It is fine if you keep it to yourself, but you will not make friends by ramming it down peoples throats.

Unless there's money involved
