Trouble is that the people who believe in Genesis and Adam and Eve also believe God created everything 6 million years ago and that dinosaurs have been faked by scientists.

Far too much is being made of it. 2018 also included the "Beast from the East" with extreme winter conditions.
And the Summer of 1976 was much hotter, although shorter in duration at a little over two months, and the highest UK temperature on record was 15 years ago in 2003.
Let's see what 2019 brings before panicking about this one year blip.

Hi Mike, let me say that as a practicing scientist and engineer, I agree fully with your assessment of Global Warming being a belief and a quasi religion,where one must be either a true believer or be shunned into the exterior darkness. Such fanatical behaviour is unworthy of rational beings.
But there is strong evidence that what we have at present is a heating effect caused by industrial activity by a larger global population. That the worlds population has trebled in my lifetime is not a figment of left wing propaganda, that more people ,being better fed makes greater demands on resources is fact, that water vapour and CO2 and CH4 are heat trapping gases is not fantasy, it is science. That afforestation, which does absorb one of these gases has increased, is also a fact.
That "global " temperatures have risen by 1.4 degrees, may or may not be a fact . What is factual is that in those locations where they have been measured they have increased....that is not a semantic point.
I choose not to comment on Mr Trump. ,But would suggest it is not necessarily" the same people" . You are just as guilty as those you would condemn, by using such a broad uncritical statement.

1. China is growing as a military power and is making strong moves around SE Asia.
2. North Korea has not disarmed, and is probably feeling that they were being conned.
3. Russia is casting more resources into the Ukraine,and withdrawing from Nuclear weapons treaties.
4 The USA is increasung its defense or offense budgets.
5. India and Pakistan ,both nuckear powers renain in a standoff sutuation
6. There is a rise in Nationist movenents ,as the lessons of WW2 fade into history.
So no.. i do not think the world is safer.

I personally do not know what to believe. Not being a scientist I can only try to find a balance. But even then, my son who is a geologist freely admits that there is no such animal as a Global Warming scientist. They all come from a range of disciplines.

There are many people who are much worse off than they were two years ago because they have lousy jobs which don't pay a living wage. The stock markets have tanked in November and are down 8% over the year. The previous year was still influenced by the previous president's policy.

Not a rumour, it is a fact that he quickly lost all the inheritance money by mismanagement. It was only sheer luck that he recovered due to a following sharp rise in US property values, increasing the worth of his buildings assets.

In my view the only sensible position on global warming and cooling is this one:
1) It is cyclical, proven by geological history.
2) Our activities add warming to it but not cooling. Therefore we change the natural balance of the earth's system to some degree.
3) The only questions are whether the next cooling phase can overcome the warming imbalance we are adding and whether it will arrive in time to do that.

Americans have a very different definition of, and feelings toward, "Nationalism". This may be why Europeans flock to Socialism and Globalism, while it is anathema to Americans.
Many climate scientists say we are long overdue for the next Ice Age. Vladimir Putin has said that Russia could use a little global warming.
