Great OP
I decided on a crank motor without a throttle for the precise reason I do not want to be "pulled along" I want to cycle using my own power as well. I want to get fit and enjoy actually cycling. I understand others want throttles and be able to get a tow without using effort. For some they have legitimate reasons for doing so and that is fine.
My personal hope, long term, is that I get fitter and my back gains some strength and I can get rid of the eBike and go back to a traditional designed bike but without the assist.
Throttle wont stop you getting fit - I've lost 18kg since starting to commute with my ebike.

Just as an aside: I use pas 95% of the time.

Today I was riding a trail which used to be a railway line, so pretty horizontal with a rather corrugated hard surface, which was making my bits go numb: To ease this, I would stand on the pedals & do a bit of a Harlem Shake, as you do :) while using the throttle to maintain progress:

Every single time I did so, 1 extra battery led went out , although I was trying to avoid this.

I daresay there's some pisychological reason for that to happen, but it proved to me what I've suspected when riding my bouncer on throttle only - I'm a ham-handed beggar & tend to use more throttle than neccesary.

Pedelec for me - Every time.
