I have been informed by some Chinese suppliers that they have been ordered to cease production for most of August and early September, whilst the G20 meeting is happening in Hangzhou.
Some of these suppliers are in Ningbo and further,it seems that the government have drawn a 200 mile radius from Hangzhou, deemed the monitoring area.
Can you imagine we would close the Port Talbot steelworks,if a G20 meeting was scheduled in say Birmingham.?

Any idea why Dave? Is it a pollution reduction measure to benefit the visitors?

I guess so,but Ningbo is a long way from Hangzhou,it is also a relatively clean city now that the shipbuilding is almost finished.
It would include the powerhouse of manufacturing including Suzhou,Wuxi,Changzhou and Changshu. Also the largest manufacturer of bearings in the world is in Hangzhou, the Wanxiang Corporation, they make bearings for the worlds auto industry, revenue 52 billion US.
I have had it described as part of the monitoring zone,so I guess they want the air to be cleaner for the G20....they would never have the meet in Guangzhou!!!

I suppose we can hardly blame them wanting to avoid more criticism, but their method to achieve that is typically drastic.

On the bright side is that they are obviously ashamed of the pollution so might eventually start to tackle it in a more positive way.

Could equally be a measure to reduce power consumption and avoid brown-outs affecting key services (hospitals, schools etc). Today the temperature for that region is in the 40s and air conditioning units are being turned off in factories.
This often happens in that region, whether G20 is happening or not.
Our factory is in an area far to the south, at a higher altitude (and a little cooler). Luckily their air conditioning is working today.

Someone once said that China is like living in a giant Tupperware box. Even on a lovely day the sun is blurred by haze. It is very rare in Guangzhou to see a blue sky,it is such a rare event that locals remark on it.
When I first went to China, some 15 years ago,you could not see the ground above the fifth floor. It has improved a lot but most foreigners still suffer the 'Canton throat' after a few days.
Actually Hangzhou is the nicest city I visit in China,it was the favourite of Chairman Mao.

Bob...yes,they are very vague about the reason, which suggests to me that they have been told to shut up....in China if you are told to shut up you do so!!
I have a supplier in Shenyang near Harbin(not bikes),they dont need air con in that area it averages minus 25 in winter!!

Later this year, Shanghai will be closing down 225 of its industrial facilities in order to cut pollution before the arrival of world leaders for the G20 summit in neighboring Hangzhou.
According to Reuters, who were given access to a document issued by the Shanghai Environment Protection Bureau, the closures will take place between August 24 and September 6.
Officials in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces will be issuing similar orders to cut air pollution within a 300 km radius of Hangzhou, ensuring that those visiting will be treated to nothing but blue skies and fresh air.

The measures are reminiscent of those enacted by Beijing in 2014 ahead of a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. The uncharacteristically clear sky during the event was referred to netizens as "APEC Blue," a term which for a while was used to jokingly describe something wonderful but fleeting.
The G20 summit, which will be hosted during the first week of September, is China's biggest diplomatic event of the year.
"Longer-term China needs to work out a market-based approach to tackle pollution rather than an ad-hoc order. Apart from social responsibilities, business has its profit and loss to take care," said Jing Chunmei, a researcher with China Center for International Economic Exchanges.
Looks like we guessed correct.
