Friction drive?

You can get brushed 24v motors very cheap, but it looks like you need to somehow get a sprocket on the wrong side of the wheel somehow. So then I thought why not modify it to friction drive the tyre? Would be an interesting and cost effective project

Friction drives have pretty much fallen out of favour now that hub motors are cheap and reliable, way more powerful and don't have the downsides of friction (tyre wear, slip etc).

But yes, it can be done if you really want to.

Keplers version seems to work quite well, his design engages and disengages as to when needed and weighing in about 1kg with motor and controller. All it then needs is a battery.
He is roadie biker so a lightweight low assist motor is all he needed, his main advantage is his climate hot and dry. The friction drive has little use in wetter climates.
