These bikes are about £1400 new and a replacement battery cost £540. With only a six month warranty, I think I would spend the extra £405, which you might have to anyway if the battery dies, and buy new.

It's amazing Frank how e-bikes only ever seem to have covered a minute mileage when they are being sold!

Bike after bike offered on ebay and elsewhere are said to have "only been used twice", "only done 20 miles" etc.

Quite honestly it's unbelievable that there are people all over the country spending £1000 plus and then virtually not using their new e-bikes, so I treat such claims with cynicism.

Hardly used E bikes

Perhaps Flecc they have been bought by older people with too much enthusiasm and money and when they have ventured out on a busy road have been too nervous to continue . I have a 72 year old twin brother and until a few years ago we used to ride our cycles to the local Cardiff Airport to plane spot along a busy road , a round trip of 8 miles . Now he won`t do it , I still do on my cycles and E bike . Could it be that I still ride Motorcycles and Scooters and am used to fairly close traffic ? We drive cars as well , but he gave up motorcycles nearly 50 years ago . We have no cycle tracks near me , the only provision is a red cycle block at some lights . What a difference to Raynes Park in South London where I used to ride on occasions .

I agree this can happen, but almost all of them, for that's how it appears on ebay at times!

My cynicism is supported by the number of occasions when I've been able to identify a claimd "few months old" bike as being from much earlier years, something that's cropped up a number of times with the Giant Lafree models.

The bottom line is, we just dont know. It could be as underused as claimed, it might not be. To me, the saving over the price of a new bike doesn't make it worth the risk. You could easily end up paying more than new if the battery is failing.

At sub £700, it might be worth chancing it, but not at £995.

I have to agree with you there flecc.
With a used car you have a fair idea of the mileage, unless tampered with of course.
Unfortunately there is no way of knowing the real mileage on a bike.
Anyone can spruce up a tired looking bike with some of these wonder sprays.
The battery is the biggest concern here :(

There is a 2009 905 SE on there at the moment at far more resonable money....

My wifes 705 SE bike was bought mainly for our motorhome trips but with the intention of commuting as well...she used it for a couple of weeks, got a promotion, and said she needed to be to smartly dressed to cycle! so she takes the car all the time. So yes I think a lot of these bikes are bought on a wim, with good intentions then end up sadly neglected.....

Hi
I agree. I was intererested enough to email him however he wants £1k and with local pick-up. Not sure I believe the tale. It's maybe been used as a demo. The price differential between new and this one is too little to take the risk.

If you really want a 705SE I'd try talking face to face with the shop. I've travelled a bit today and had some significant discounts offered on Giant and Trek. I'm sure if you talk cash, rather than credit card, you'll be offered a fair discount.

I'll leave this one.

What about if the battery was tested and shown to be 100 capacity?

Holy thread revival!!;)

My last but one phone showed 100% once charged. Then lasted a good three minutes before it was flat. I guess bike batteries, and any other battery for that matter, can do the same.

Hi Jilly,

As per our discussions, a battery needs to be tested under load to find out if it's still holding a charge.

The symptoms you described on your recently accuired 5/6 year old Wisper, that has hardly ever been used points very much towards battery failure.

The problem in my opinion, is that as the battery has hardy been used in five years, it has most likely been left flat for some considerable time. This is the surest way to kill a battery I know.

I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, as arranged, at our warehouse in Kemsing. Claud will be there to look after you. Fortunately we still make and stock replacement batteries for your bike.

Kind regards, David
