It has been mentioned several times on here that a lightweight hybrid bike with "maintenance-free" rear hub gear + front Tongxin hub motor and small battery pack is indeed a very desirable setup for fast commuting.

The Shimano Alfine 9 gears is known for its good range and smooth action. Well, apparently a 409% range 11 gears version is in the pipeline (it should cost about 300 Euros):

300 euro thats £260. the alfine 8 is about £120? So thats a lot more money for 3 extra gears....

Ooo I see a group buy for Tongxins and A123 packs looming :p
