Folding bike gears

Have had my Woosh sport CD a while now, but have decided to sell and buy a couple of folding bikes, so we can take them in car on holidays and days out. Wife's sold her bike and I'm going to probably stick mine on Gum Tree. Question I have us re gears, on the Woosh changing gears when under pressure needed a knack to avoid lots of noise and complaints from derailleur gears, the back worked OK most of the time. Is this a problem with all electric bikes with derailleur gears, as if it is I'm sure the wife wouldn't cope with it at all,her old bike had Nexus hub gears, and was no problem. Looking at bikes, it seems lots of fold ups have derailleur.

you've not said on this thread which bike your wife had, multiple threads on the same enquires just confuse everyone, stick to one thread, or at the very least provide more information.
Was her old bike even crank drive for example?

Bosch and Yamaha CD bikes are much better than Bafang CD at changing gear.

Oops.. sorry. Her bike was a Peugeot remember model, think it was a crank drive, gears were hub. All I am asking is would she have same problems I have on my Woosh cd sport with gear change, if we bought folding bikes with derailleur gears, I suspect it's the crank drives that cause the problems. Just don't want the earache from her if I get it wrong.

with hub drive, she will rarely need to change gear, especially if the bike has a throttle that makes easy to start on hill. It's the same if she rides your bike on gear 5 and never changes gear. Just use the throttle to start and when the motor kicks in, start pedalling.

Any bike with a Bosch or Yamaha crank drive motor will be okay with any gears you choose. Hub gears may require a very brief pause of pedalling when changing gear, but they're nothing like as awkward as the Bafang you have. I don't think they've improved the Bafang yet, so best to avoid Bafang crank drive motors unless someone knows of any new developments.

Only crank drive creates gear changing issues, hub drives don't affect the gears.

All the Bosch and Yamaha bikes come with gear sensor.
denwyn has a woosh CD motor without gear sensor. Without gear sensor, you have to blip the brakes or slow down your pedalling about a second before shifting gear.

You sure about that? yes I'm aware of what bike he has, and don't want reminding of what you need to do to change gear on them.

you have a point. Kalkhoff fit gear sensor inside the frame but don't know if Peugeot fit gear sensors too.

Ok, thanks for all the replies, think i may be restricted a bit by selection on fold up bikes, but a least i have some idea what to look for now. the Woosh CD sport is a nice bike, when you get used to the gear change, i will miss it, but fold ups will suit us better for getting in smaller car, plus we will use them more. Did have tow bar bike rack on older car, not really practical, two bikes on was difficult, very heavy load. dont want to go down that route again.

I take that to mean you considered having two bikes on the bike rack to be a heavy load, rather than the bikes were heavy to load.

As in the other thread my advice would also be to carry two normal bikes on a towbar mounted e-bike specific rack, you could also carry the batteries in the car to reduce the load a little, but really no need.

Its a new car and i dont really want a tow bar fitted, bikes are heavy to load, and wasnt ever very happy with them on the rack on old car, anyway it went with the old car when i sold it. foldup bikes will be better for us

I don't think they will be. Don't buy any without loading two in and out of your car and folding unfolding, and then riding them.
Folders are not as stable to ride, and e-bike folders are awkward heavy bulky lumps to get in and out of a car. The reality is going to disappoint you.

Testing may be a bit of a problem, only one e bike stockist where I live, who don't stock folders as far as I know.So buying on line is only real option. Folders are only option for car ( Skoda Fabia) . I would take battery off before lifting the bike anyway. Not going to rush into this, have to sell my Woosh first.
