heres one done properly here. The one on my Twist as done correctly too, but its in the bike shop. Ths one I have put on the Pro-Connect, and from what I see on the Agattu's arent 100% right as I understand they are supposed to be inside the forks, not on top of them

Flecc beat me to it :)

Flecc, I am concerned about the placement of these. shouldnt it go inside the forks, not on top of them?

They are also commonly outside on the Continent as on that Agattu John, and they are outside on the Lafree as well of course.

Hmmm this worries me. I think they are meant to go between the fork struts. If on the top of the forks, what to stop a thief just using a metal bar an snapping the unit away from the frame, then removing the back wheel and goodbye bike?

It would make sense for it to be placed between the forks wouldnt it?

Don't forget they go around the mudguard as well John, so the thief would have to cut or remove all the mudguard stays as well to do that, all a very unlikely scenario.

Without a mudguard the removal you describe is the same inside the forks anyway, since the lock can be angled slightly on the wheel to get it through the frame struts.

I think these are great locks - secure, quick & easy to use and pleasing in design.

I've just bought and fitted an Abus lock to my bike this afternoon. The instructions were hopeless. When I realised what I was supposed to do, it took me 5 minutes, but I'd spent an hour making various errors.

I'd fitted an Axa Defender to a PowaCycle in the past, and ended up using the cup-hook fitting kit from Axa, which worked fine. I went with the Abus this time because the shop-owner said she had it on her bike, and that the fitting kit was better. She said she'd fitted an Axa recently to another bike but given up on the metal ties and just used half a dozen normal cable ties.

Front or back?

It is quite clear I am not going to be able fit something like and Axa or Abus on the rear of my Mistral. Is there anything against fitting it on the front where I have a lot more space? I am sure there is but I cannot think of anything at the moment.

Only the weight added to the front Rod, these locks being fairly heavy. One I weighed was about 800 grams. Otherwise there's no reason for not putting one on the front, just so long as it didn't interfere with the sprung fork travel.

Lock on front

I suppose weight on the front is an aspect worth considering but I can't think that 800 grams is going to be too catastrophic bearing in mind some bikes actually the motor in the front.

I think I will make up an 800 gram weight and attach it first of all and try it out to see what sort of difference is makes. Even if there were a slight weight penalty it would be better than returning to a bike that is no longer there!

All the best

I want to remove axa defender lock completely from my bike.appears to be fixed to two lugs on frame -presume it is bolted on. do not like idea of spokes being damaged by somebody forcing wheel to turn if lock on - if left unlocked key cannot be removed and anybody could activate lock and remove key! I do not care if lock is completely destroyed to remove it but presume there is some way of just unbolting it? any comments please
