Fitting a cycle computer

The cycle computer that came with my Wisper worked fairly well when new but then randomly went from showing 99mph to nothing. I had trouble getting the sensor to notice the magnet and had to position it less than a millimetre away. Wisper did offer to replace it for someone else but I wanted a cadence sensor so I ordered one from SJS.
It turned up and I religiously followed the instructions (even measured the circumference properly) but I can't get it to show a reading for the speed or the cadence, both magnets are passing within the 3mm specified and both are wired connections.
Is there a trick to setting up sensors and magnets as I don't know why I have so much trouble with them.

Mussels,

Not a trick as such, but the orientation of both the sensor and magnet is important. They both have directional properties and it isn't always apparent from the packaging.

Another thing I've seen with some of the sensors is that they come in a cylindrical package, but its only the tip of the cylinder that is important. You need to position the magnet to go past the tip rather than the body.

Interestingly, if you get the set up wrong, some speedos will count multiple pulses. I once managed to record 400 mph across the Blackmore Vale on my Torq, and then opened it up to 600 once I got on the A30.

What type is it?

I recently set up a Cateye Cadence on my bike. As Nick says, you need to play with the lateral orientation as well as the spacing to get it to read. I had to pack mine with old inner tube to get it close enough, and slide magnet up and down a bit for the lateral adjustment.

However if neither is working it may show a fault. have you been able to get it to show any reading at all, even while in your hand? When I was setting up mine I tested it first and was able to get a cadence reading by waving the magnet back and forwards over the sensor.

Is it wireless? I had some problems in the past with a wireless sensor due to interference with ebike power cables and motor.

I deliberately got a wired version because I had read that before.

Testing it by hand would have been far too sensible for me. I'm going to try moving it up and down the fork and later I can try the old magnet by hand to see if I can get anything.

It's messing with my mind now. I went down to give it a quick try and it worked straight away, this hasn't worked at all since I fitted it and waits until I post up a thread about it.
I haven't tested the cadence sensor yet as the bike is locked up but at least I'll be able to tell if the cars holding me up are doing the speed limit. :)
