I live in Helsinki. Drop me a PM if you want to go riding sometimes, especially in the winter :)

My favourite bike shop is Hi5bikes in Herttoniemi. Huge selection and very good prices. Few ebikes too (mtb). It's a bit far from my place though. Another favourite is Ridemore in Konala. It's pure mtb shop with few ebikes. In Konala there's also Electrobike. Ebikes only with good number of bikes, service is just not that good compared to the other two mentioned. But worth a visit.

Get good studded tires, like Schwalbe Ice spiker pro or Nokian Extreme. It's good fun.

Thanks a lot, you've been a great help! One last thing, I've read conflicting reports about the legality of ebikes in Finland; some places are saying you're not allowed a throttle, some say you're only allowed 250w motor and just recently I read somewhere that there's new regs that allow up to 1000w! What's the real deal?

Member Tinu1234 in Finland previously confirmed to me that it's definitely only 250 watts and 25 kph.

That's also EU law where throttles are not permitted, hopefully Sherman will enlighten on that point for Finland.

New regulations came to effect beginning of this year. Pedal assist only, max 250W and 25kph are still considered as bicycles. Then there are 'motorized bicycles': max 1kW, 25kph, throttle allowed. Insurance is required (60-80 EUR / year). Also Segways, hoverboards etc are now legal. So we have things pretty good here :) I' m planning to build an electric cruiser as my next project (750-1000W with throttle) ..

Thanks Sherman. So yours are the usual EU membership laws for both pedelecs (250watts no throttles) and the L1e-A 1000 watt class.

The UK and I believe some other EU countries require a category Q driving licence as well as insurance for the 1000 watt L1e-A "motorised bicycle" class, but perhaps you are lucky enough not to have that.

Perfect. Kiitos a lot for your help, I owe you a kajlaa (and my Finnish needs some work, but clearly I know the necessities).
