Writing that post got me so annoyed that I have just emailed the Department of Health.

If (and it is a big if) I get a reply and they want to know more please back me up guys!!!! :)
And here it (generically) is. Slight nod towards EAB's so at least they got the nub!

Thank you for your email of 19 June about the health benefits of cycling. I have been asked to reply.

Physical activity is important to everyone and promoting active lifestyles can help us address some of the important challenges facing the UK today.

Increasing cycling and walking will reduce transport costs, save money and help the environment. Cycling is a valuable source of physical activity. More cycling will help more people meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, improve their physical and mental health and well-being , while reducing their risk of premature death and ill- health.

Some GPs are already working with cycling organisations to help patients get more active through activity, for example, the national cycling charity, CTC. CTC are running the Cycle Champions Programme that is extended wherever and whenever possible. CTC will continue to provide cycling for health projects. The experience of running the champions programme has given CTC the opportunity to introduce cycling for the purposes of a healthy lifestyle, not only physical wellbeing but also for mental health.

Electric bikes may be an encouraging mode of transport to help people get into cycling and give them confidence to cycle in hilly areas for example.

As far as the NHS is concerned, it is down to individual GP practices to promote health enhancing behaviours in accordance with the needs of their patients and their understanding of the evidence base.

Yours sincerely,

Edward Corbett
