Proof that I must be mad!

I had to look at a job today that was approx 18miles away, so rather than head straight there, I drove approx 18 miles in the wrong direction, parked up, and then cycled a round trip of some 47.5 miles just to look at it.
I figured that I might as well try enjoy what was left of the weekend, and what a lovely day to have chosen.

As an aside, I haven't seen the film, but does anyone recognise the Piaggio?

I forgot to say. Neely, the bridleway at Keymer has been resurfaced. ☺

Those look better suited to doing something like the Melbourne Shuffle. :D

I've been using clipless for about four years now, and fell off the very first time that I used them. I pulled up to stop at a busy junction, and down I went!:D

I really like them, and they are ideal for a lot of the narrow gullies that tend to ride through. I have also often cursed them, but only when making steep and tricky climbs. For going downhill, I have never felt them to be a disadvantage.
I've tried flats several times, and just don't get on with them. I also don't like the bulky look of them.

It's all compromise. I mainly use shimano xt pedals, had xtr but not very heavy duty with sids shoes carbon sole. Then i swop pedals and have some five shoes. Like you couldn't find jack of all trades.

I find the AM5 and DX pedal works for me. Enough platform to work not clipped in.
Crashed loads of times clipped in, set at lowest tension, no issues.
You will have the newbie clipless wobble and fall, mine was into stingy nettles. Now it's second nature to bail when needed.

I'm using Time Atac MX4's and Five Ten Kestrel shoes.
Time Atac have a bit float for my doggie knees. They have enough platform to pedal comfortably on if you don't get clipped in straight away when re-starting on a steep hill and could be used without SPD shoes for nipping down the shops. I also find I have a lot less pedal strikes compared to the V2 flats they replaced. Shoes are Ok to walk in, not as solid and unforgiving like the SIDI's I have, and feel more like trainers than cycling shoes.

Yet another evening of unexpectedly dry fun yesterday.

In order to try the light out, I even made a very rare trip onto a road. I'll probably rot in hell for that! :(

I also now have a bit more clearing to do. Although I haven't had much in the way of free time, I have still been busy making my downhill route rideable again, only to use it last night, and discover that upon rounding a blind corner that has a lovely drop on the exit, that a tree had fallen straight across the track.

Sadly, I have to go on roads to get to off-road. I wish I never had to ride a bike on a road.
Despite living in quite a populated area, it takes me just 1 minute of road riding before I am of road and playing.

I was out again last night, and had intended cover a route of roughly 25 miles, as I had hoped to learn a section of the ride, in readiness for my organised night ride. Frustratingly, there is one section about 18 miles into the ride, that I have only ridden twice, and it is very easy to take a wrong turn and potentially get slightly lost.
Things didn't go to plan, and I came across a lad on quad riding very slowly through the private woodland that I have permission to ride in. He worked for the estate, and had lost a dog. It was no big deal for me to stay local and in the woods, and I ended up riding 11 miles with an elevation gain of 1,647ft whilst searching. After seeing his lights again, I caught up with him, and he said that he came back in to find me, as the dog had been found and handed in at the local vets. It isn't the first time that I have been out looking for lost dogs. :(

Neglect of duty on my part. I didn't get to clean the bike last night!

I really do rate and love these front forks.

In the last 10 years riding around King wood and the North downs i've rescued a Kestral, found numerous lost dogs, helped find a runaway horse who's rider fell off, called ambulance to assist other mtbers and helped to round sheep up. On these occasions it really has made my day in being able to help when out on bike:)

It'll be interesting to see how you find the cassette.

I'm having a bit of a love hate relationship with the set up. I love the smoothness and quality of shift and use, but I'm finding the leaps between the gear range, a bit excessive for my use and it somehow doesn't quiet work. This is only noticeable on down shift, when you go from a gear that slightly overly high, to the next one down that then has you spinning. It can become a slight irritation at times, as it is sort of a juggling act to get things right.
In part, I think that the terrain around my neck of the woods, (average 1,200ft of elevation gain for every 10 miles) just isn't steep enough to warrant the range of gears. In the alps though, I don't think that it could be bettered, and I'm certain that it would come into it's own.
Riding unassisted is just so effortlessly easy to do, and if you were ever left with a flat battery, it would be no real effort to just carry on.
