Hi all,
as a result of an accident my wife has lost confidence on 2 wheels but would still like to cycle so I am thinking maybe a trike. So what would be best way to go. Ready made or conversion. Any suggestions gratefully received

Hase, Icetrike and others do more grown up versions. Hase have a pedelec version. The KMX's are quick but not very practical.

Crikey, I know a lot of weird bikes off by heart!

Thanks cosybike. The ones you linked are very nice but a bit expensive. It will only be used for flattish trail riding. Why are the KMX not practical.
Thanks gray

Rather than buying another bike that she might not use, perhaps change tactics, and take her along to traffic places to ride and hopefully get her confidence back.

Cycle tracks, beach promenades, parks that have open cycle routes, even industrial estates.

If you or your wife have friends that cycle, perhaps get them to tag along and offer encouragement.

It has to be worth a try first. :)

They are really low clearance, small wheels and really low sitting position. great if you are under 25... Nothing wrong with quality and VFM though. I have tried them but only ever seen them at try a bike type events. The others I have seen in serious use on road.

There is a kmx on gumtree for £600 go go go!

My main trike is lower, smaller wheeled and much more reclined seat and I am 53 :)
The plus side of the low height is extremely good cornering and braking, they will out brake any bike by a massive amount, which adds to the safety.

People either love or hate them, if you can get your wife to try one she will know by the time she has ridden 100m.

99% of trikes can be electrified, it would have to be a real odd ball not to be able to be done.
If her current bike is electric and has a rear wheel hub the back wheel and electrics could be swapped over assuming the same size wheel on the trike.

Changing to a trike will be a disaster if she is used to a normal bike, Fit these to her existing bike and save yourself a lot of time and cash. http://www.ez-trainer.com/ I have converted bikes for people with the exact problem you describe with total success. Read this link for the experience of a trike buyer to whom I gave similar advice which, as is her right she chose to ignore. http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/electric-trike-carrier.23075/#post-290154
Thanks Kuorider, those stabilisers look like they are just what I need now I have balance problems, and cheaper than buying a trike. Perhaps I will be able to carry on using my bikes after all thanks to you.

Eddie thanks for your input M8. Have to agree that would be a viable option, and may well work. She has always been a bit of a reluctant cyclist but was starting to enjoy it till she fell off. Although generally very healthy and reasonably fit she is apparently at the very early stages of osteoporosis and therefore very wary of taking unnecessary risks. Which is why I was looking at 3 wheels as an option. Very early days yet
