Anybody who has travelled to a Chinese city cannot fail to notice the millions of electric bikes.
The Chinese system may be of interest,it's not exactly green!
There are big factories who assemble these bikes, millions per year.
They are usually twist and go,800 watt direct drive motors, lead acid batteries, crude frame, they build them for about 150-200usd.
They are sold in supermarkets or e-bike dealers for 200-300usd,the expensive ones are quite smart with chic colour schemes, nice seat and grips.
The bikes are designed to last maybe 18 months, the battery is almost dead and the badly painted/plated bits are very rusty.
The Chinese have a class system,it's called money!
If you are upper lower class or middle class you chop it in with your local dealer, chop in value about 30 usd, and buy a new one,the old one joins a stack that looks like a breakers yard for e-bikes. If you are poor you take your broken bike into the dealer and he rummages through a stack to find a similar motor or controller and repairs it by 'plug and play' till it goes again,10usd bill.
Old batteries get ripped apart or dumped in the river.
The system works brilliantly in China,I am told the turnover per year is 20-30 million bikes but there is no warranty,no SOGA,no liability insurance,no green lobby....we could have them here if we didn't want all these protections!!!!!
