I am sure you guys will remember those bikes and their impossible weight and a battery like a HGV.

Indeed. The one on this link was in later years and had a front wheel motor. Earlier ones had a rear wheel motor like the one on this link.

Mine was front wheel motor with cradle frame and battery sitting between the tubes. Brakes were woeful compared to my hydraulic discs now. Battery had to be reconditioned and the company supplied a custom made box sent to owners, battery packed off and it would be returned in the same box in readiness for the next recon. I think I remember each recon was £70 but that was about 15 years ago so a tad expensive. I remember the bike was £700 new which was a lot for me then.
One revolution of the pedals was needed to activate the throttle and from then it was twist and go.
Yes it was 15 years ago but compared to today's tech it was more like 150 years.
The weight was horrendous and the centre stand was a necessity.

It certainly was, more motorbike like and a shock to anyone unsuspecting going to move it as if it were a bicycle.

The company's slogan always amused me:

Powabyke - The Innovators

They stuck with the same basic design for a whole decade, while most other e-bikes made huge design progress. They paid for it though, becoming insolvent just after celebrating the first ten years and having to be rescued.
