I rode on a path near a housing estate. Half a dozen hooded youths checked out my bike as I went past. I am sure they would have grabbed the bike if they could. The ebike is a great prize for a hoody chav. I read this story and wondered if this is what we have got to look forward to in the UK?....https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/nyregion/stolen-ebikes-food-delivery.html

It's reported as a common problem on the Bristol to Bath cycle-path, and here's a story from London. I'm always wary, especially when cycling off-road secluded routes. I've already had 4 youths on stolen mopeds try to run me off one cycle-path.

There have been a few people attacked round here - on normal bikes rather than ebikes but the same applies
It seems to have been older school kids that are bored etc
I do find that going shopping with a new ebike is a problem - with my old 10 year old ebike was a bit battered and I often left it secured to a tree or something with no problem.
WIth the new ebike I don;t really feel I can leave it anywhere that I cannot see it from the shop

However, I have found that a lot of people eye up the ebike because it is unusual - they have heard of them and are curious. A few have come up to me and asked about them. So - the people eyeing it up may just be curious.
maybe

A 25kg ebike with a 75+kg rider going at full speed isn't easy to stop if if they get a hand on it. Another thing that works very well at night time is a Chinese headlight. They're bright and dazzle, so they have no idea what's coming other than a bright light. It could be police for all they know. Normally. I partially cover my light if I see people coming towards me, but if it's chavs, they get the full effect, which is a shame because some of them are probably nice guys.

Many times, I've seen a bunch of them ahead, all spread out across the cycle path and blocking it. I always think,"Here comes trouble", but when I ring my bell, they politely move to the side with a smile. It's the women that you have to look out for. never say anything to them

I wonder also if a panic alarm close to hand would be useful.
It's a fact that out hearing range starts to lower with age.
What is just very loud for us oldies can be less intolerable for teenage thugs.
In fact, high frequency alarms have been used to deter youth crime but apparently some consider them to breach human rights.

First up, if you can't hear a sound at 8,000 Hz, you're either hearing impaired, or not alive, because that's the point on the spectrum where everyone, regardless of their age, is capable of hearing clearly. Raise it to 12,000 Hz, and we knock out all the over-50s. At 15,000 Hz, we lose the over-40s, and at 16,000 Hz, anyone over 30 is going to be struggling to hear anything.

There was a story floating around years ago that they tried something like that when a bunch of chavs were hanging around near some shops making a nuisance of themselves. According to the story, they solved it by playing classical music instead.

Those of us of a certain age remember the hi fi boom of the 70s/80s where the aim was to find the Holy Grail of separates to get that perfect sound. Still continues today at even greater expense I see from browsing What Hi Fi.
But I have to remind myself that whatever I hear my music through, I am probably missing the nuances that I would have noticed in my 20s - and reviews of headphones and speakers will unknowingly be limited by the hearing deficits of often "veteran" reviewers who are in their 40s or 50s or younger ears finding qualities, I in my late 50s cannot appreciate.

Mind you, didn't stop Beethoven who I once read, used to follow the orchestra by feeling the vibrations they made but did not know the audience was applauding when he had his back turned to them.

And car drivers wonder why we don't want to use cycle lanes, or cycle routes that take us off the beaten track into dodgy parts of towns...
