My e-bike kit has just came , but the battery hasn’t. I checked and the battery is supposed to come in a long time, but the battery is 48v 16ah for the kit. I have a. 48v 13ah at home, and I was wondering if I can use that for the temporary without any “fires” that my mum is worried about because she thinks it is “mix and matching”. No personal opinions, just straight to the answer. thanks

Kit arrived but not the battery - what about the new charger for the new battery? If a new charger arrived with the kit, best not use it with your old battery, until you upload detailed photos of the label(s) for the expert dudes to peruse and personally opine professional perspectives.

A straight answer that will satisfy "the mom" is impossible as even the new battery yet to come may cause a fire. Not all fires are caused by mismatch and misuse. Here is another nuanced opinion: given the alt battery is 13Ah and its a working ebike battery its very likely capable of supplying 13 A (1C) or more. At the very least will not fry at 15A dain. So safe to use with the new kit.

That said, you are not confident about this makes me doubt your ability to connect it correctly --- the connector looks identical does not mean it is wired identically (+/- could be swapped).

So my verdict: do not use, wait for the new battery.

You need to keep things in proportion. In the ten years I've been on this forum with thousands of members, nobody has reported their own battery fire, despite many of us using the cheapest batteries from the Internet.

It's true that there are battery fires, but we have no information about the circumstances that led to the fires, and most of them seem to be badly lashed up bikes used by Deliveroo riders.

OP did the right thing asking the question. The answer is that if it's an ordinary 13Ah 48v battery in normal working condition, there would be no additional risk using it with his new 15A kit.

Loads of members have reported punctures, and we've had a lot of discussion about how to fix them and how to avoid them. What's that got to do with batteries catching fire.
