The above bike does seem to get some pretty good reviews and I'm interested in the system they use. The performance seems to come close to what I'm looking for in a kit-build.

Can anyone explain the make-up of the system incorporated in this bike and whether it's possible to approximate it on a kit build ?

Ta !

It uses theBafang BPM2 motor with a 250w label on it. I don't know what power controller it has, but is very similar to my one with KU93 controller at 25 amps. The Neo hasa torque sensor that detects when you're pedalling, and you can set the power at a wide range of levels through a control panel, which gives natural and responsive control. It has a high discharge rate battery to provide the current.

You can get the same power with any rear BPM or CST and the KU 93 controller with a 12aH Headway battery or 20aH shrink tube battery from BMSBattery. I'd get the 500w motor and KU123 controller because they don't cost any more, but give as much power as you'll want. Look at Saneagle's Kraken with CST motor. He had exactly the same idea as you after he tried a Neo at Bristol.

That's sounding much more promising :D .. if the Neo is managing to get away with being rated 250w is there any way to legalize the spec and get the same performance they are managing to achieve ? Has to be worth investigating ...

The torque sensor / control panel setup sounds exactly the sort of thing I'm after and plugs the hole which I've been feeling was left by the basic motor/throttle/controller/battery package we've been discussing before. How do we build a bike with that extra functionality and proper speed sensor / batter monitor display built in ?

PS - where in Bristol can you test ride them ? I'm not far from there at the moment and can likely go down on the train / bike as the line is a high-speed FGW route.

Thanks a lot - will get in touch with them and try to take one for a test / see what it really feels like.

Hopefully get out and test one next week. Is this bike definitely EN15194 certified ? Just a question on the Neo technology too - there is a boost setting delivering 3:1 assistance on the description of the technology on BH's website.

Is this boost setting in use on UK models ? I'm not sure but I think the assist tops out at 2.5:1 on most commercially sold cranks... or am I completely off the target with that ?

Yes defiantly EN15194 certified.

Yes the Boost mode is on the UK Models.

Information is based on ownership of one.

Thanks. Also, I see you have both a Cross and an Extrem. Do they perform pretty much the same as far as the power and ride are concerned ? The motor and system look identical.

Power wise yes.

Ride wise the Cross is a faster road bike with the ability to be ridden on reasonable off road tracks (eg tow paths) and the Extrem is better off road but not as fast on the Road. Which is I guess what you would expect.

I bought the Cross first as I was mainly looking for a commuter bike at the the time and the Xtrem later as the price was hard to resist (and as I was thinking of getting a second battery made this made it even more attractive).

So I guess which is best will really depend on what you intend to use it for. If I was pushed to choose only one I think I would go for the Xtrem as it makes a better road bike than the Cross makes a off road bike but I really suggest you try both if you can.

Thanks GaRRy. Sounds like the Cross would actually do for what I want it for better and this is the one I can test out. Not so fussed about taking an eBike into harsher off-road territory in UK and proper off-roading is only ever an occasional thing with me. The Xtrem is likely to be a 2nd hand-only thing at the moment and can't find any demonstrators nearby ... the next UK allocation all pre-sold before the shipment has arrived. It's obviously a bike that's very attractive in the off-road market.

Hi I have had my Neo Xtrem for a few weeks now. I live in a very remote part of east coast Victoria Australia Known as the Wilderness Coast lots of tracks here along the coastline I am very impressed with the Xtrem but it seems to me all the Neo range has crap seats and peddles I changed the seat first to a Selle TRK which is good and the seat post to a USE Sumo shock post and have just fitted Shimano MX 80 pedddles. Really this is how the bike should be in the first place the peddles I changed today. The ones that came off were grinding and had play in the axle's. The new MX80 were wider and I found I could stand up longer on the peddles without getting muscle burn. I dont seem to be able to upload photo's maybe I am not yet allowed?

I'd be interested to know what sort of range your getting from the battery.

To upload photos, go to photobucket.com and open an account. It's free and spam-free too. Upload your photos there, and when you select one, you'll see links tabs on the right. Click on the "IMG" link and it will copy a link that you can paste into your post here so that we can see your photos in full detail. No re-sizing is necessary.

Dave

I reckon im getting betwen 40 and 60 kilometres on a charge dependant on where riding and condition of route etc. Although I have empted a battery bombing around on Cannock Chase in not much more than 20K

To put this in perspective Im 53 and weigh 115 kilos give or take a few kilos plus all my gear and am certainly in no way super fit..

For another idea I ran out of juice on this ride with less then 1/2 a kilometre to go (bearing in mind this was only about the second full charge of the battery). I ran this in standard mode for the first 18K at which point I realised I needed to conserve battery if I was going to complete (was down to 40% at this point). So after that used mainly economy and switching off when going down hill. Route is probable 95% off road although mainly on good firm surface.

Drool at those photos. What a gorgeous place. Wish I lived somewhere hot & sunny with warm water. Could do away with all the "stuff" you have to carry about and put on here, just go to the beach, lock up the bike, chuck t-shirt in seatpost bag and go enjoy the waves. Life would be so much simpler. Well, jellies and sharks aside :p

Ban 'im, mods!....

Spreading grief & discontent like that is undermining the very principals of this forum:

How are we supposed to maintain the ethos of whingeing & carping on about the lousy cold, wet weather when these colonials come on here bragging about 18 deg water temperature & even claiming to have a Summer

We have Summer in the UK too. It's the one that's like Winter but without the snow.
and occurs for 1 day in August

Has the mist not charm? Does the rain not freshen the fields green? Does the snow not lie starkly magnificent on British hills? Where’s your sense of poetry chaps?
