Hidden (in the bag lol) battery on my Brompton.

Battery (up to 6Ah, 2Kg) in the back left pocket, controller in the right.

All connects to the Brompton (motor, throttle and brake cutout) with an 8 wire/pin umbilical wire.

Could I ask for more information about this "umbilical wire"? If I understand correctly, there is a single connection that when is plugged / unplugged, the whole system is connected / disconnected. Is that right?

How does it work in practice? From the controller, there are some cables in (throttle, brakes, PAS, battery) and some cables out (to the motor). I would like to understand how this is done with just a single connection. Thanks.

It's just a multi plug....connects all the wires at the same time.

Thanks. I did not know such a thing existed. Just to confirm, this multi plug is able to unify in and out connections, in arbitrary number / size / ... under a single plug, right?

If I'm understanding your question correctly then yes....Jerry will be able to tell you more about the exact plug he uses....but yes it connects all the required wires thorough one plug.

See this pic.

Basically its an 8 pin plug that carries 3 motor wires, three throttle wires and two brake cuttout though as I use one of the hidden brake cutout units this also taps into the red + supply of the throttle as well.

A separate power cable goes from the battery on one side pocket to the controller on the other side.

So you end up with something like this

Then the male plug connects to the bike motor, throttle and cutout brake and is plugged in once the bag is attached to the bike.

When not attached the plug parks on the bike to keep it all tidy.

This is the plug

Wow, that is great, Jerry, thank you very much for your explanation. And the PAS?

What PAS :p

I only use throttle though that one shown is PAS only no throttle.

Here's another approach by dingrpdl

Thanks again.

So, if you do not have PAS, why do you need cutout brakes? I thought e-brakes were only necessary alongside PAS.

If you had to install a PAS (plus e-brakes, throttle, battery and a LCD / LED), do you think an 8-pin or 9-pin would work too?

There is a quite a few here, there maybe UK equivalents, mind you with the strength of the GBP to AUD it might be worth importing one the -10% GST should just about cover shipping ?
http://www.reefbikes.com.au/ I would strongly advise avoiding REEF bikes they sent me a second hand bike sold to me as new. they would do nothing about it, even with pressure from BH Australia. BH replaced the Extrem bike with a 29er this bike below is available from China for $1400 on Alibaba site
A few examples

Technically you don't but I still like one in case the throttle jammed or something. In addition I also run with "cruise control" i.e. you hold the throttle for more than 10 seconds and it maintains the speed even if you release the throttle. In that case you need a cutout to reset the throttle to zero though blipping the throttle has the same effect. I like to keep all my conversions simple (less to go wrong) if you want to look at adding more components like LED etc you will need a plug with more pins which you will find hard especially if the motor wires are rated an a higher ampage.
