How it's all changing, mainly due I think to developments in cheap battery technology. It doesn't seem that long ago (about 2007 or 8) that I started getting interested in pedelecs to maintain my cycling. I bought a UK made pedelec from ebay (can't remember the name but it was made by a UK supplier of disabled mobility aids) with crank drive, 24V motor (reputably a truck windscreen motor) and twin 12V SLA batteries. It was a surprisingly good hill climber (hub gears + crank assistance) but quite top and rear heavy. After a year or two I sold it again on ebay for a little more than I paid for it.

TGA Electrobike, sadly discontinued years ago instead of being developed.
