E-bike one speed

Hi,
I purchased a used E bike for my son recently.
I've managed to get it working, but it only has one speed when in pedal motion. I'm getting an E 10 error on the display. I believe I may need to replace the motor controller. Can anyone please advise which model I will need to replace with? Or provide alternative? Maybe replacement of controller and wiring?

You shouldn't replace anything unless you know what's wrong, otherwise it can get expensive.

Disconnect everything from the controller except the battery and LCD, then in sequence plug in the motor, the throttle, the pedal sensor and the brakes to see what codes you get.

Has your LCD got any identification numbers written on it?
