Does Batribike Granite do regenerative braking ?

Hi, I am thinking of buying a Granite on a cycle-to-work' scheme, I tried one and was happy with the performance - 2 year warranty on the battery is also quite good.

I was quite keen to try the feature where 'if you pedal twice backwards while going downhill it uses the motor to slow you down' - I read about this in 2 reviews.

However I found that this does not work - does it work for you ?

Also I wonder if these bikes can be de-restricted for off-road use?

I have just looked at the Batribike site and the regen . models of 2010 - 2011 are listed as obsolete . These were the Diamond , Granite and Quartz with suffix regen . Obviously they can`t have been successful . As far as I am aware nobody offers regen . in their range . My Batribike Quartz SE was obsolete a few weeks after I bought it nearly 3 years ago .

The regenerative braking is a new feature on the 2010 Granite and Diamond models. This is activated by pedaling backward, be prepared when you use it. It's designed to slow you down and that's exactly what it does. No matter how fast you're going it'll take you down to a crawl in roughly 2 seconds. It's a handy feature and no doubt it will become my primary brake.

2010 is three years back now, and that's a long time in e-bike model terms.

No, the "Granite", in the form of the Granite LCD, Granite XL and Granite LS are very much 'alive' and doing very well, especially the LCD. It is a great bike.

Just to make it clear, the current model has no regen, the 2010/2011 regen model obsolete and discontinued.

Ive never tried pedalling backwards on an ebike, apart from when I put my sensor on the wrong way round

When on a very quiet throttle-controlled e-bike with panniers hiding the rear wheel motor and a discreet battery, it's a great way of confusing other cyclists!

my novice (but engineering driven) opinion would be that it can't make sense unless you have a very efficient system, or a very heavy brushed motor (and hence a lot of effort to peddle backwards) the smart ebike i road has it, and claims some really impressive range figures, but applying the brake when the bike was stationary suggested i was regenerating the battery - so i remain unconvinced.

that said, as i said, noobie novice comment alert, so stand to be corrected by someone who knows what they are talking about

The amounts regenerated on e-bikes with this feature are very small due to the low mass and speeds. Very few e-bikes have ever featured it and most that have tried have dropped it, as in that Batribike example. I see it as a marketing feature rather than a useful one.
