Do you let friends have a go?

How precious are you with your ebike? You wouldn't just let a friend have a go on your motorcycle so would you let friends try out your ebike? I'm very reluctant due to the cost and the fact that this is my pride and joy.

Yes of course I do \ would ( that is if I had friends. ). It's the easiest way to turn doubters into converts.

The analogy with motorbikes is flawed. You need insurance and licence and they are dangerous (motorbikes that is not my imaginary friends )

Yes you'r right the motorbike thing is different.

I let my son have a go on my brand new bike. Him an experienced cyclist couldn't unclip and nearly fell off. So for me it's a no... neither borrower or lender be is my motto in all things...

I can't say that I really care less, and just let anyone that is interested have a go. Sometimes I cringe as I ride along with them, whilst they crash their way through the gears, or grimace when they fall. I'm not overly precious about any of my bikes, and just see them a tool to do a job. I adopt a you bend it, you mend it policy. If letting others have a go, encourages more people to buy ebikes, which is very much proven by the amount of people that now own an ebike because of my introduction, then all is good.

 

I certainly don't feel that way about my work tools though.

 

 

edit.... Having said the above, no one is going near my pedal mtb.

One of the people who works in the same place as me is a keen cyclist - first day he was in after I got my ebike I let him have a go. Was head-down working so didn't even see him going off. No problem at all.

I give random bike riders a go on mine. Especially if they query it. "Is that an ebike? What are they like?"

No surprise there Leigh. You're very active in the community and an evangelist. I always wished we could interview your dog. What would they say would be the biggest change since you've been on ebikes?

I would only let trusted friends I think. I've spent so many hours modifying my own bike that it wouldn't just be a financial loss if it were nicked. If someone I trusted broke something, there's nothing much, battery excepted, that would cost too much to replace.

As we're no longer attached to each other, I reckon that he'd say there's only ourselves to blame when we crash now.

If you'd have stuck with this, something enjoyable and bonding for both, you could totally make an e-scooter that could add assistance as the dog gets older. That's true and I'd probably have gone the electric scooter route at some point. However, I was going to move from scooter-joring to bikejoring and get myself a mountain bike for the purpose of continuing bikejor. It was then that I considered assisting the dog, and ended up buying my first ebike..

 

I run a bikejor club and advise others on this sport / pastime now. When I retire, I'll train people's dogs to do it, as an extension of being a dog walker for high energy dogs (huskies and hounds) that are destructive in the home, if not sufficiently exercised. On my ejoring travels I get lots of enquiries thus.

 

The funny thing is that my sheepdog (shepherd) is an exceptional free-runner. So, although he can run and pull attached to a bike or scooter adequately, it's just as much fun with him free running. Less risky too I reckon.

 

It's quite a boast. Judging from the other free running trail dogs I've seen, and I've seen a lot, I'd go as far as saying he's probably one of the best in the world.

 

But, how long does a good thing last? Long enough to enjoy it while it's here I suppose.

I've overtaken gobsmacked looking cyclists, on my scooter, whilst being towed by this dog at speeds up to 27 mph. Believe me when I say that it's a bit 'exhilarating'.

Im not keen to let others try my bike but if someone didnt let me try theres i wouldn't have one now.One 2min try was enough for me to say ,I Want one,.We have a small dealer in my area who sold cheaper versions i tried 3 0r 4 of his .Nearly bought one but went for something else.So to be fair i let him try mine in the hope he would up his range .

I think I'd let someone have a go that was possibly contemplating getting one but I'm thinking of a friend that simply wants a go for the hell of it and who doesn't normally ride a bike anyway........and a clumsy friend at that :-)

Today, being a nicer day by far, one of the other two who had expressed an interest had a go. Very, very impressed with uphill start and round the block. And with the full suspension. Then the third person, who had been looking somewhat reluctant, also had a go. Similarly impressed. This time, I did watch them out of interest.

 

It was when I hopped on to ride home I started to be aware of quite how used to riding it I had become. Started at the beginning of the month and have ridden every workday since - come rain, come hail, come ice and, hopefully, come sun!

I let the Police Superintendent of a certain European city try my bike.

He loved it.

I didn't have the heart to explain to him that in his country, he couldn't have a throttle!

Do I let friends have a go? Yes.

 

On one occasion I let three interested teenagers have a go, even though I didn't know them or where they lived.

 

Of course I did have two hostage as each in turn rode!

Since I've already mashed the rear mech hanger, and got a pile of scratches from a few incidents, I'm not that precious about my bike! A couple of the guys at work have ridden it, and my brother and dad also.

 

I don't get too hung up on the appearance of it in terms of scratches to the paintwork, I actually prefer the well used look. There's a genesis frequently in the bike room with even the drive train always bright and shiny and new looking. It just looks kind of weird!
