Do you insure your electric bike?

Featured Replies

I have 2 bikes and both are insured on my home policy. It's worth checking with them for details. In my case I had to declare it's value if over £500 and make sure it is always padlocked to something.

Likewise, mine is on the house policy, this being the cheapest option declared at replacement value.

A "Sold Secure Gold" D-lock & a cable through Q/Rfront wheel & expensive seatpost.

Mine is on the house policy - another £30 a year! I contacted several on line insurers who seemed baffled and uncertain as to whether they would cover an ebike. "I'll have to check with my managers" was a typical response, so I gave up and went to the house insurer.
Going to get a bike soon and I'm thinking about insuring it.

I've come across the following site which gives a high level comparison of policies.

Do you insure your bike? If so I'd like to know your experience and whether you think it's worthwhile.

Like the others, ours are on the house policy. I think it was around £20+ extra.

House policy for me as well.

Strictly, the bike should be 'tethered', and there's a £2K limit.

The insurance company weren't interested in the type of bike, so it's really them making a £30 bet with me they won't have to pay out on lump of metal.

It's never certain they would pay in the event of a claim, and my two bikes would cost about £4.5K to replace.

But I tend to think it's unlikely both will be stolen, and if I could get approaching £2K for either in the event of loss of one of them, I would be happy enough.

I suppose each company is different so it pays to check your cover. Last year my phone got wet and my home insurance replaced it within days, but with a £100 excess is all. The only test of an insurance policy is when you make a claim!
