Thanks for the very full information Alan, but I think there's some misunderstanding present.

This being an electric bike forum, it's the knowledge of the electrical side that members tend to refer to, rather than the cycle side where a high degree of expertise is not difficult to find as your CV shows.

It's in problems with motors, controllers, batteries and ancillaries where expertise is almost non-existent in the UK cycle trade outside of some Powabyke service centres, with even the importers often knowing little to nothing. The number of times that help has been sought by importers and manufacturers even, from myself and David Henshaw of A to B magazine bears witness to that, as does the number of occasions where it's this forum that's sorted a problem where the importer or dealer has failed.

I'm hopeful that the development of specialist dealerships like yours will gradually change that situation over time, but for the present the problem is a very real one.

My experience of ETS was quite the opposite, when I had trouble with my spokes it felt like it was a new problem that they knew little about. The first fix which I paid towards only lasted 4 miles and nobody seemed to know why, after looking on the CTC website it was a fairly well known issue that I'd expect an experience mechanic to know about.
ETS had all but given up on finding a solution when Wisper agreed to finance the next repair, ETS had found it but weren't convinced enough to pay for it. Alan may be an experienced bike mechanic but that doesn't seem to be filtering through.

I can't speak of any ETS branch from personal experience Mussels, but can understand your problem when you were tied to their help by warranty. If that hadn't been so, you'd have found no shortage of wheel building and repair skills in the cycle trade, though the electrical skills are almost universally lacking.

I agree electric / electronic skills are thin on the ground in most cycle shops.
We have learned a lot, mainly by trial and error. Our shops are pretty good at sorting out the majority of electrical gremlins. Batteries are the biggest variable factor in the business. If we are not sure about a new technology, we tend to do our own objective testing before putting something on the market. A battery that should perform well (in theory/on paper) must prove itself.
Some things about a bike take time to discover, such as longevity of batteries and build quality. For these kind of issues, we rely largely on the backup support of the supplier. All of our suppliers give us good back up support on the whole. If they don't then we can't in turn give good customer support. This usually leads us to dropping the supplier concerned, such has been the story with Urban Mover and Ecobike.

Please excuse my ignorance here and I'm sure I'm being daft, but are these two e mail adresses not very far apart?
Yes, David edited it, hence his thanks to me below for spotting it. The original link had "mail" instead of "miall", a very common letter inversion that most of us do from time to time.

N.B. Tenderbehind, you might be more intrigued by this response being 22 minutes ahead of your above post.

Hi David,

I would be very interested in working for wisper as I am a current student at Bournemouth University, studying Design Engineering, and am developing my own e-bike kit as part of my final year project! I have plenty of time to spare (16+ hours a week) so if you are thinking of setting up a shop in the south (bournemouth area) and can give me some basic training, or some parts I can fiddle with =) then I'm your guy! I'm also in dire need of a part time job, so you can tell I'm motivated! Let me know if you want my CV!

Kind regards,

James

Thanks

Thanks Guys, we have now come to an agreement with a member who lives in Guilford Surrey and we will be posting details in the new web site that will be launched this week. (figures crossed!).

Re ETS, our experience with these guys has been amazing they are very professional and thorough. I can't remember there being a problem that they have not been able to solve. Being one of our best retail partners ETS have access to our engineers in Shanghai and ultimately our motor and battery suppliers so there are no questions that cannot be answered.

The only time they need to contact us now is to order more bikes or to check that we will cover a warranty issue.

All the best David
