It depends on the stack height, i.e thickness from bottom to top. You cab put spacers on the axle to compensate for the extra thickness, and I'm sure you can spring you frame to get them in, then you'd have to dish your wheel to centralise the rim.

Remind me what the problem is with freewheels that causes people so many problems keeping up with the motor pedalling at higher speeds and delivering effective pedal assist in lower gears on hills ... is it the overall gear range pure & simple or the limited size of the front outer chainring which causes the main problems ? I'm aware there are issues but have not really got my head around the cause and effect yet to be honest

It's when your top gear has 14 teeth, which is the norm for free-wheels. You need 11 teeth on the top gear for an electric bike unless you like to go slow or pedal fast.

Sorry for using this old thread. Question: would it be possible to use a DNP 9spd (or the Sunrace Cyclezee announces) into a "5-7spd" Xiongda? And into another "5-7spd" hub motor?

Cyclezee, do you have a review of the Sunrace? Do they work well in practice? The fact they are "e-bike" freewheels, does it mean the freewheel is more robust? Would this 9spd fit where a 7spd fits?

Hi Arbol,

Sorry but I don't have or know of a review, perhaps someone else does.

Sunrace are regarded as the best quality, but a spacer shim is required between the freewheel and the motor casing as well as between the freewheel and dropout and they are more expensive than the DNP's which don't normally require a spacer between freewheel and motor.

Would a 9 speed fit where a 7 speed does? I guess that you are talking stack height and off the top of my head I can't remember the difference in mm.

The seven speed DNP is the one you want. The Xiongda is already a wide motor. The 8 speed will make it even wider. I don't know about the Sunrace one. You need the dimension from the back to the front plus the back spacer. Whatever ones you need, you'll need some 12mm washers to act as spacers. Ideally, non-standard 12 x 20mm or even smaller OD. 12 x 24mm is standard.

If any one is interested, i stripped a DNP Epoch 7 speed and 8 speed freewheel. yes they can be stripped and the ratchet mech rebuilt. and yes you can rebuild and replace the 11 tooth ..or any other sprocket..the first there or four appear to be standard cassette style splines.

I actually re built my wider 8 speed units on a narrower 7 speed body, by a bit of careful lathe work on each gear, spacer and splined body. I actually wanted merely to make a unit thinner than the 7 speed to fit my Xlyte 'brute' hub, but it ended up the only way I could make it all work was to rebuild as an 8 speed..but thinner than my original new 7 speed.
