Contrary and complimentary to what Woosh has said about crank drives .. centre motor ebikes. The motor placed in the crank allows the motor to have the advantage of the bikes gears. Electrical motors , just likehuman legs have a sweet spot for speed and going faster is inefficient and going slower is also highly inefficient. Using gears allows the motor or human legs to run at its coolest most efficient speed irrespective of the road speed, weight of cyclist or road gradient. A motor placed inside either the front or slightly better rear wheel, can only attain this sweet spot at one road speed.
