Jerry, that's exactly the sort of damage I've often seen which is usually caused by "kerbing", especially if the tyres are soft. Not saying you did this, but it happens when the tyre is flattened against a sharp angle and the sidewall is crushed between the rim and tread edge at that point, severing the cords in the tyre carcase.

It can also happen if an obstruction in the road is hit which is enough to cause the same sidewall pinch pressure.

Possibly flecc, though I don't recal kerbing. I had just taken a sharp left turn and I am sure many of you know that sinking feeling when things feel strange at the back and it suddenly dawns on you that the rear tyre has gone down.

I think more likely I damaged the tyre getting it off and on with tyre levers but as I said I have learnt a lot and can now at least get my tyres on without using them.

Good news was I had an uneventfull commute to and from work, at least in terms of punctures

You tend to become paranoid after you have had one.

I actually came across 3 other Bromptons today on my way too and from work. One of them zoomed past me even though I was under power!

Jerry, it might not have been your fault. I've found Schwalbe tyres to be very hit and miss. I've had 4 and 2 of them were defective. A 50% failure rate for tyres is, in my opinion, dreadful.

Reading around a bit it seems that Schwalbe tyre problems are pretty prevalent especially rim wire problems.

This is all related to their studded tyres (all variants) though. I get the impression that their non-studded tyres aren't as poorly made.

That may be true, but this was a Brompton yellow flash tyre.

I now have a Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the back and a Schwalbe Marathon on the front. Time will tell I guess about their reliability.
