Andy-

I am pretty sure this is the controller:
It is a true sine wave and the maximum wave of current is 30A +/- 1A. model number: KT48ZWSRL-GP05

Cheers, Tony.

Andy-
It is all a balancing act and about compromises. You will never get the ideal because there are so many conflicting parameters with every e-bike-they are as individual as their riders. I was thinking about getting this with a rear hub kit 48v 500w imported by cylotricity and supplied by Powerbikes who have a brilliant reputation for after sales service.
However, now I am thinking more along the lines of a crank drive conversion as I want the extra torque on the hills.
If you get this controller and attach it to your 36v 250w motor, you may find it will burn the motor out depending on what your battery can provide. Twitch your nose for burning smells!

Andy-
Down? Stoke-on-Trent is wayyy up North for me!!! Interested to know who they are and what other components they upgrade at the same time.
My Freego Eagle's controller is a very tiny affair, it sits in the crank casing along with my buck converter for my 12v ciggie lighter power supply, there is no actual current rating on the sticker, but a quick back of the envelope calculation tells me it would be not much more than 10amps.
I just had a look at the Freego Hawk, it's pretty much the same as my Eagle, except it's a step-through. The controller sits in the same spot. Does yours look like this:IMG_20160811_105310.jpg IMG_20160831_100411.jpg

Andy- Don't tell anyone but I was actuallly born in Bradford Yorks.

If you want to upgrade your controller, a larger current one probably will not fit in the crank hole where the old one is. Heat dissipation is a consideration if you are going to mount a new one in a bag for instance.
