Hi All,

I have hovered over the forums these last few months since I ordered a Cyclotricity 1000w stealth, and I wanted to post once I had some experiene with the bike.

Just to summarize, I am a 45 yr old male and have not ridden a bike for 20+ yrs and knew literally nothing about bikes (only know a little more now.). I bought this bike for an occasional cycle to work, so I give an honest opinion underneath.

I would like to list positives and negatives, but I only have mostly negatives listed in list below:

1) Firstly, lenghthy delay for the bike to arrive form ERirder.co.uk. Disappointing to wait 2 months for the bike, excuses were Covid, so mechanics not available to build the bike to production. Not an issue with the bike, just delivery. But makes me question the attention to detail?
2) Bike arrives, all intact (as far as I can tell, seems well packaged). As part of the order I upgraded to hydraulic disk brakes and this was the 48v/12amh model. After seeing the bike for the first time, I initially disliked the tyres. They were 29"x2.10 but cheap rubber and easy to puncture. I guess they are fine as road tyres, but as I would like to go offroad, my first choice was to replace these with Schwalbe tyres.
3) Be careful if you change to "knobbly tyres" as I did, then you may find grinding on the back. I changed intitially to Schwalve 2.2 tyres, but due to the rubbing on the rear forks it was not a goer. Am back now to Schwalbe 2.1 tyres on the rear, and there is just enough space on the rear forks to avoid catching. SO basic alert, the frame is narrow.
4) To me the bike is riddled with cheap parts! On my 2nd outing on the bike, the chain snapped! Thankfully the motor got me home. Looking at the chain the brand is "best chain", so I assume somee cheap Chinese import. I replaced with an officicial Shimano chain. ( Should note the company I bought it from,"Electric Rider", offered to cover the cost if I took it to Halfords etc, but I decided to sort on my own to avoid delays.
5)The default Shimano Tourney derailleur may suit some, but I found it clunky, and have since replaced this. Major issue I had was I found a problem with the rear mech hangar being slightly bent. Not good! I have ordered a replacment ( again should have reported this, but delays etc, etc.).
6)Having replaced the derailleur above for a higher end derailleur, the chain started to keep dropping offf the front chain ring. It seems a combination on the chain having somehow distorted and the chain ring itsef being **** poor has caused this extended issue. The chain ring supplied with the bike is cheap and wears easily!! Replaced chainring with a narrow wide variant, and all good.

In Summary:

This bike (in my opinion) is built in the cheapest fashion, with the cheapest parts, with errors occurring during build ( ie, my back wheel not aligned properly. Blame Coivid or not for these mechanical issues?)

If you like glossy black and white paint, you will love the appearenc of this bike. I had to wrap it.

I have had to replace most items on this bike to make it a "better bike"
1) Chain ring - Please change this to a "narrow-wide" ring. The existing ring is heavy andcrap!
2) Change what you can, I replaced the handlebars and seat post to reduce weight. You will appreciate the weightloss
3) Change the tyres you get, if you ordered the base version. They are cheap tyres and will puncture.

This bike is a cheap frame and cheap components,

I have unlocked the bike to its full 1000w capacity recenlty, and there is joy in riding in this mode (not fror long distances) I love it!

But since I have had to replace most components, I couldn't recommend this bike. Buy the bike, but expect to pay way more in improvements to make it a "great" bike to have fun with.

My wife, for her first ebike had a Cyclotricity Sahara. Similarly, we found the build quality to be very poor with cheap components. Every time she used it, bits broke or became loose, even after being tightened up. The final time she used it, the rear rack slipped and broke the electric cables, just couldn’t get it to work after that. We sold it in the end for parts or repair.

These guys maximise profit by selling crap bikes with very basic low level components. A DD kit is the cheapest one that can buy and often have crappy control systems.
One is better building ones own bike or buying from a reputable ebike seller or brand.

So it appears I now have a new problem with this damn bike! I've hardly used the thing really, and have had to change most parts already.
Now it appears the 48v/12mah battery is not charging. I left it charging overnight and having gone out on it this morning, the motor kicks in but only lasts a few seconds and the battery indicator on the lcd display flashes.
I should note, I have the optional thumb throttle installed. If I hold this on, the motor kicks in and the works for a few seconnds then loss of motor for around 15 secs, then kicks in again (and so this sequence continues). When I got back home I checked the battery status leds, and there is just one green light and a single red lit. So the battery is low on charge according to this.
Have left the battery charging today for at least 6 hours but no change to the battery status leds reported above! I am seriously fed up with this bike. Haven't got round to testing the charger etc with multimeter, a job for tomorrow now. Usually the charger has a red led on the unit until the battery is charged and then it changes green. The charger has been on green since I plugged it in?

Looking at the Cyclotricity website, it suggests the issue with the battery could be the "input fuse" which can be replaced.
Does anyone know the type of fuses in these batteries, and could ideally post a link to one for reference?

Usually auto blade fuse could be micro or regular size. Some chargers have an internal fuse as well.

Ok, thanks Nealh. I will see if I can open up the battery tomorrow to check what fuses are visible. I am no electrician, so hopefully they are pretty obvious. I can then attempt to test each one.

I have ordered a mixed set of auto fuses (never hurts to have some available even if not applicable to the battery). Not opened one of these before, any tips people? What rating of fuse should be present for the "input fuse" on this 48v/12mah battery?

Just an update for those who may encounter a similar issue. I have opened up the battery pack, and found the 5A input fuse blown. These are standard auto fuses, so have replaced this and now looks to be charging. Will know for sure tomorrow once I take the bike out again. I hope this is the last issue I have with this ebike. Regrets....I have a few.

Switch the charger on first and then connect to the battery, it may have been a dodgy fuse or the inrush was too much for it if the charge wasn't on.

Word of caution. if its being charged in the house I'd never leave it to do so overnight, as there have in the past been problems where cheap electrical products have caused a fire killing everyone there, and given the materials in the battery and plastics involved in the build are all highly toxic, even if you do wake up there's no saying if you'd be capable of escaping in time.

As you've realized its all cheap, so the chances of something causing a major electrical issue must he high as well, so it's best that you never ever take the chance.
If its being charged in the shed that's considerably a better idea, just don't have anything else in there you can't afford to lose.

Unfortunately BSO's have never went away, and now we have EBSO's to add to that mix.
