Hell's Teeth!

There was just nowhere to go.

Glad I don't ride anywhere that drivers totally ignore the bike lane like that.

That road looked treacherous and there were a number of times when I thought I'd reached the point where the accident was going to happen. I also thought the cyclist was going too fast for the traffic conditions, especially on the approach to the accident scene.

The car emerging from the left had its front end sticking into the cyclist's path and there was the another approaching head on ready to turn right across him.

For some reason vehicle drivers seem to become consumed the politeness in these situations, almost to the point of benevolent incontinence. They start waving at each other and assume authority to beckon the other car out into the path of oncoming traffic. Unbelievably, the driver receiving the waving or manic flashing of headlights places complete trust in this totally unknown person's judgement and they carry out the manoeuvre in blind faith. I've noticed that in these situations, drivers tend to focus more on the waving or headlight flashing than what is actually happening around them. It's a growing trend, along with updating social media status whilst driving.

I can imagine that the cyclist was watching carefully that driver with his nose poking out as being a significant danger. You can see him start to move away from the edge to give it more room. I think that this is partly why he missed the car that got him coming from the other side. I would have done the same. It looks a very nasty situation all round. Even the earlier two cars with their noses out were worrying. It looks like somebody upstairs had ordained that he was a legitimate target that day!

That's a good point. The first time I watched the clip, my attention was focused on the car emerging from the junction and I didn't notice the car which ultimately turned across his path.

Like d8veh I thoght the number of cars sticking out were worrying, they would have made me very nervous about their possible intentions. I'm guessing that road has such a high traffic frequency that drivers start to get impatient waiting to get out of side roads so start pushing out further.

That's where I'd have been looking too. Drivers are generally a little more careful when turning right across oncoming traffic, but not this moron.

It's another case of not enough cyclists, notice here were no others in sight on that road. When they are few and far between drivers tend to fall into the habit of only looking for other motor vehicles and completely miss seeing a cyclist when they glance ahead before looking and turning right.

The account afterwards is always the same, "I just didn't see him/her."
