Cycling in the Rain!!!

Hi Team,

I'm determined to keep commuting as long as I can as we approach the winter, I've had a couple of really rainy days so far and the two things that annoys me the most are soaking wet feet and rain in the face, especially the eyes.

To tackle the eyes problem I bought this today:

The reason I'm posting a thread about it is I'm sure you guys have a lot of other great hints and tips for staying dry every day!

(I ride a Woosh Rio MTB and the next thing on the shopping list is a decent front mudguard, the rear ass saver actually does a decent job now that I have it positioned correctly!)

I bought some shimano waterproof cycling boots last year which look like hicking boots but with sealed slits for spd clips. A bit pricey but worth every penny

I always wear something like these safety glassed to keep the wind, midges and rain out of my eyes. I've also got some tinted ones for rare sunny days.

Thanks for that. I ordered one. I wear glasses so I can't wear goggles. I get terrible trouble with snotty nose because of the wind in my eyes. Hopefully, that will solve it, but it doesn't say that the visor is anti scratch, so I don't know how long it'll last.

id not wear that if it was sent to me for free because a stone strike at speed could shatter that visor and in a crash be next to useless anyway.

That helmet looks awesome! I had thought about buying a motocross helmet and goggles which would be safer, warmer and drier...but as its only for commuting I thought it might be a bit overkill...plus I bet its pricey.

.....and as I'm based in Northern Ireland where ebikes are considered motorbikes I thought a motorbike helmet might be sending the wrong message!! LOL

Last insect strike was a midge that went in the left nostril just as I was breathing in. Straight into the left lung... Cough, cough...

Waterproof walking shoes for the feet. Aren't too good on the trike but are great on the upright. Casco helmet with visor forge eyes.

I've two things left to buy, decent waterproof boots/shoes as my Woosh Rio has normal pedals I don't need fancy bike clip on shoes.

Finally, a decent front mudguard.....I'm really hoping for some good suggestions on this one.

As much as I love my Rio (and I really do love getting on it everyday) in the rain there is always a part of me asking....

I've got motocross bike and have used the helmet (along with goggles) in the past.

You look a twat commuting through town, but they do work - albeit a touch heavy for cycling. If that's the look you want I'd go for a proper DH helmet.

I stopped wearing safety glasses because I found light rain / drizzle on them cut visibility too much, especially in the dark. A peaked cap keeps rain out of the eyes.

You aren't going fast enough, that light rain will pearl off at about 80 km/h

A front mudguard with a proper, deep - but slightly naff looking - mudflap will keep your shoes all but dry.

By deep, I mean a mudflap that extends to within a few inches of ground level.

I wear boots similar to the first pair that you have linked to, for walking across the fields at work. The soles wear out very quickly, and I suspect that the soles might not be durable/hard enough for continuous cycle use.

edit.. I should add that it can be a tricky task finding overshoes of the right size. More often than not, they come up undersized. If you do happen to order a pair, make sure that the company has a decent returns policy. Better still, buy from a shop and try them on first.

In bad weather I cycle regularly in a cheap pair of mid high Karrimor walking boots which stay waterproof for maybe a year or so, I also spray them with nikwax every now and then.
I do like those boots Damian links to above though. May have to try some when my karrimor's start letting water in again.
The main thing I've found is to ensure the waterproof overtrousers are long enough to not ride up over the top of the boots and lets water run straight in.
