CycleCharge Meeting, 4pm today

Hi, I'd just like to draw attention to the post I made yesterday about the CycleCharge meeting planned for today.

Perhaps some of you never saw it buried away on the CycleCharge thread!

Anyway, the meeting is still on and Lynda (funkylyn) and myself will be there, and probably a few of our volunteers). Here's the link to the chatroom page if anyone wants to take part. It is just a text chat room but you won't need any special software as it works on most browsers.

It's not a formal meeting or anything, and anyone is welcome to join in the discussion or just sit in an watch.

It would be great to see as many forum members this afternoon to get as much feedback and ideas as to how to progress as possible.

Cyclecharge exists for you all and we need you all to help it progress next year for everyones benefit.

Thanks Lyn, I put a link to a "wide screen" version of the chatroom at the bottom of the chatroom page on for people who may have smaller screen devices.

I've also written a meeting agenda summarising the project position so far, and looking at some areas we might discuss further looking ahead to next year... Excuse any bad grammar or spelling, it was a bit last minute ;-)

Perhaps before the meeting begins people can read it over and have a think, or we'll allow some time before the discussion starts for latecomers to read it over and pick out any key areas they want to contribute or comment on.

Of course, any other topics or areas I haven't covered can also be discussed too, but let's not let the meeting go on for hours and aim to finish in 1 hour?

The aim is really to just to cover some broad strokes and general direction I think.

To me the most obvious supplier of national charge points
would be petrol retail outlets, the national infrastructure is already in place.
If presented to one or more of these major suppliers, who may wish to improve there green credentials .

That's a very good idea Jazper, and no, it's never been thought of before! You're right, approaching orgs with a national infrastructure in place (particularly ones involved with transport) makes sense..once you get the org onboard, you potentially have all their places of business as new CP's overnight..much more efficient then selling the concept to individual businesses..although of course, individual independent small businesses are still important to us and local communities. We could perhaps try franchised operations, like pubs and hotels too by going to the head offices.

It is a good idea to get a national chain involved but I'm not sure a petrol station is a place a cyclist would hang around in while their battery charges. Now: Starbucks, Costa coffee and Little chef type places might be a place to wait for an hour while you top up a battery.

Yes its a good idea but normally getting chains....any chains to come on board has been fraught with difficulties.
But if anyone fancies taking on one....whether a garage or coffee chain as their 'pet project' that would be fantastic

Personally I think we are still better off going with individual businesses...but hey....a chargepoint is a chargepoint.......bring them on

The more we get the better.

May well run into Elf & Safety and Insurance problems with filling stations.

My public liability insurance specifically prohibits me from cutting grass or other property maintenance at them.

We are going all out for media awareness and publicity over the winter, so if anyone has any good ideas or can help in any way it would be great to hear from you.

All in all a very productive meeting.......thanks to everyone who joined in for a while.

Great meeting, thanks to those who contributed!

I've posted a quick summary of what was agreed and our plans for the next 6 months on the bottom of the meeting agenda page for those who couldn't attend the meeting or are interested in following the progress of the project.

These meetings are good because they create a lot of energy and ideas flow, so do come along to the next one if you missed this one..even if you don't fancy being actively involved in the project or are too busy, it's nice to have different ideas and input.

We don't cover Ireland unfortunately Dave. Did you mean sign up as a Charge Point? We could certainly extend it to Ireland if you wanted to become a Charge Point though, I don't see no reason why not. I'm drinking some fine Irish cream liqueur right at this moment, so that's one very good reason why we should extend to Ireland?

If you meant to join as a member to use UK charge points, you can certainly do that, no matter what country you're from.

The e-bike scene in Ireland is growing, mostly in the South-West and West, but it's gradually getting better known and hopefully if there's any e-tours going on anywhere near here, at least the presence of a CP will enable some folk to extend their journeys.

CycleCharge goes Mobile

Some CycleCharge news....

We've teamed up with CycleStreets the bicycle route planner and mapping service to get our charge points on on their maps and mobile apps!

I contacted them last week and we got a very warm and friendly response saying they would be happy to include our charge points which can be displayed as "places of interest". They're currently being added so should appear shortly.

They have free Android and iPhone apps available to download from the respective sources.. other mobile-device users running Windows or Java will no doubt be able to use their mobile-friendly map directly off their website on your devices.

This is a very significant development as not only does it make our service more accessible, but it also saves us a lot of development work and potentially enables us to reach more e-bike users through CycleStreets user base.

CycleStreets are going to post an announcement on their website in due course explaining about our charge points, and we'll be creating an area on the CycleCharge site shortly dedicated to CycleStreets explaining how to use the apps and mobile maps.

CycleStreets are also using their contacts at BikeHub (another similar service that works with SatNav) to try and get our charge points on their platforms too.

To add a new charge point, just need to register for an account on the registration page which is CycleCharge - Register. Once you have an account created, the next stage is to create your charge point profile which requires entering a few details (address, telephone, email, opening hours, and optionally a website url).. you can also add a URL to an online photo of the premises which is recommended as it will display on your profile page and looks nicer!
