Just seen this bike advertised with hardly any info, it’s a non-runner as it needs wiring sorting. It’s got a 36v battery. They’re wanting £160 for it. Is it worth it if motor can be seen running, or is it best to steer clear?

I'd test the battery and charger with a multimeter
And ask how it failed and symptoms
without doing that id not pay 160
If battery is a goner then I'd only pay 80 quid for it. And only cos I have a mediocre spec 36v battery surplus (and several controllers) so I could repair for zilch plus time and sell on

Agree above with Kirstin check the battery voltage at least you will know if it's balanced and takes a charge. That alone doesn't mean the battery isn't knackered and voltage won't crash at the first sign of any load. If the hub turns /works then worth a punt if battery checks out, the issue being not being able to test ride it to see if the battery voltage crashes.
If the wiring is a mess or kaput for about £50-80 you can fit a new lcd and controller etc.
Barter for it offer £125 the hub will get 30 - 60 quid on ebay other wise the bike looks to be in good nick from the pic.

Seems to me that 'needs wiring sorting' is a euphemism for completely broken and I don't know what's wrong but a dealer told me that it would cost £400 to sort it out.
Apparently it's an 'unfinished project' which I always take to mean un-fixable. But the guy has fitted new sest, mudguards, crank, pedals etc. so he must have thought it was worth investing money on it. I don't mind getting my hands dirty but don't want a money pit. Might go and have a look and get more info.
Wiring is easy if its been butchered messed with replace easily enough with a new Kt controller , pas, throttle & speed sensor and with LCD is about £75ish off Aliexpress or PSWPower. All depends if motor and battery are working. Or you can get the cheaper one controller kit d8veh has been using from Aliexpress for about £55/£60.
So what was it like before it needed a new seat, mudguards, cranks and pedals.
Also, look how the rack is fixed, how do you get the battery out if you want to charge it inside a house?
OK, been to have a look, and it seems genuine. The story goes that this guy has bought it to 'do up', hence putting new bits on. The frame and everything looks in really good nick. He decided to upgrade to a 36v battery as it's a 250w motor and a friend was selling a 36v battery. Once everything was fitted the bike no longer worked. He has removed the old controller and tried a new controller from HK, but that also wouldn't work. He assures me the motor runs, and was willing to show me it running but I didn't have time to wait to see. He's got another controller, but didn't know what all the wires were for. He's isolated the 3 phase wires, the battery wires and the 3 hall sensor wires. While he's been trying to sort this, he's had chance of another bike, which he's bought and has lost interest in the old one. The battery fitted shows 41v. The bike comes with both 24v and 36v batteries, both chargers, and a couple of controllers that may or may not work.
Anyway, have decided to sleep on it, so any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Good point, never really thought of that. If it was definitely easily fixable I would take a punt and sell it on. But it's never going to be worth a fortune.

I wou;d take a punt at £160. I got mine up to over 30 mph and it would climb steep hills without pedalling. The motors are quite strong, so can give a lot more power than standard. I would guess that it just needs wiring up correctly. A new battery would be about £200 for a reasonable one - if it needed one.

Just about any controller will work with it. The one you tried probably will work if you wire it up correctly. Did you check that the separate ignition wire was powered?
I think the ignition wire was the problem, I haven’t bought it yet, still sitting on the fence. The controller is shown below

Well that’s probably why he can’t get it to work. Where’s the best place to get a decently priced controller delivered quickly please?

The Cyclamatic has a very rudimentary control system, which was fine in its day, but modern ones are so much better. If it were my bike, I'd spend the extra money and take the time to get it sorted with a sine wave controller and LCD, which costs about £60 to £70 from China. You can get a cheap controller from EBay for about £20, but you only get one power level, which is maximum, or worse still can be proportional to cadence. You won't know until you get it. Make sure you get one with a PAS connector.
The PAS works in the opposite direction on a Cyclamatic, so you'll most likely need to take the crank off and flip the magnet disc.
Finally, the controller compartment is very small, so most controllers don't fit, which means that you'll need to do a lot of wiring to mount the controller.
The S06S from BMSBattery and an appropriate LCD is what I'd use, as it's small enough to fit and gives the best function.
