hi all, just taken up cycling again at the ripe age of 59 but struggling as unfit and lacking strength obviously uphill etc.. and considering an electric bike so as not to get disillusioned and pack it in.

my commute to work would involve about 8 miles with some uphill sections and knowing nothing about electric assist thought this site would be helpful in gaining the knowledge needed to make a sensible purchase, any comments would be most welcome

Richard, good evening.

I guess the first couple of questions would be.

Do you want to get fit or are you happy with an ebike that does most of the work for you?

Have you a budget in mind? You can spend £500 to 5 or 6k.

hi srs, thanks for your reply
i want to get fitter if that makes sense i,m happy to put the effort in but would like assistance uphill certainly initially as i build up my strength and lung capacity - lol at the mo i find myself running out of steam and pushing the bike up to more level ground

i guess my budget would go to £1200 ish

Have a look at the Cyclezee offerings.
They have a strong motor & will get you out on those days you can't really be arsed, but let you put in as much effort as you want on the "Super-hero" days.
Anyone saying you won't get fit riding one hasn't ridden one as much as I have :)

With the requirements you've listed, any electric bike will be suitable, so take your pick. I don't know of any bikes that are bad enough to cross off the list. They all work pretty well. It's only when you have selection criteria towards extremes that enables you to eliminate bikes as being unsuitable. It would probably be a good idea to go with one of the forum sponsors because you get very good backup, so click on the various adverts around the page.

Richard, your 'spec' is pretty much perfect for most electric bikes...I did a recent posting about the merits of all the different motor types,if you search through the forum I am sure you can find it,maybe a good starting point.
The current top selling Kudos bike is the Tornado at £1095.00,we normally throw in the option pack of lights, mudguards etc.to forum members.Mountain style bikes seem the current favourites.
But our Kudos Tourer bike gets overlooked,it really is a good all round bike, available with either Nexus or Derailleur gears, very much a road or bridlepath spec bike, price from £965.00

I was looking at the Tourer when I started to compare bikes but the power seemed a bit on the low side for my hilly area. I was told that you have no plans to put the BPM in it. Is that right?

Richard, the power on the Tourer is pretty much the norm for most of these electric bikes,it is the BPM motor that is a quantum leap in terms of power.
I would love to have a dealer in the Leeds area,it would be ideal for a big population in that area.
We can supply a bike direct from our warehouse if there is not a convenient local dealer....or a trip down to London.
