I have a 500w direct drive front wheel motor with a KT36ZWSRMT-LCD controller and a KT3 LCD display.
The motor has drag if you want to pedal without electric so was considering changing the wheel for a 250w geared motor with a freewheel and wondered if my controller/display would be compatible.

Yes, perfect for geared hub. What is the controller current rated for ?
Is the KT sensored ?
As you have found out D/D hubs are pig to ride unpowered a geared hub will allow unpowered riding though hills will still be energy sapping.

How many motor wires ?
Unsensored = 3, sensored 8 or 9. With KT a sensored model has 6 thin wires in to a white square connector block.

Your hub and controller are sensored/sinewave, you have the DJ7061 white connector block with the six very thin sense wires connected.

You can use any of the medium oe large geared hub-motors. Make sure you get one with the speed you want. 201 rpm for 15 mph 260 rpm for 20 mph and 320 rpm for 24 mph (26" wheel).
