Cold Head

I have always worn a woolly hat when riding, but now that I am getting on a bit in years, my children insist on me wearing a helmet. (Strange, it seems only yesterday that I was insisting that my then 6 year old daughter wear gloves when learning a two wheeler!)
So, I have a helmet. Unfortunately its got holes in it. Fine if on a normal bike when a bit of cooling is nice, but torture on a pedelec.
Anyone got any suggestions?

You can get thin skull caps of eBay for a few quid that will keep your head warm....

Aldi have sold a fleece lined neoprene cap which fits under a cycle helmet for the past three years. It usually forms part of their winter cycling gear. If previous years are anything to go by, the winter gear should be on sale any time now, so keep an eye on Aldi special buys.

I have used one for the last two winters and they are very good. The cap pulls down over the ears and neck, fits under a helmet and eliminates wind chill. I think they cost about £1.50

get yourself a bern helmet...just a few slits in the top, if you dont want to wear one of those skull caps.
if you want a skull cap and want the best, then get a fine merino wool one from 'rapha' ....bit expensive but a luxury item !!!!

I filled the holes with some black ESD foam cut to the right shape. Remove them in the summer and replace them in the winter. Works for me.
For really cold days (and we had plenty last winter) i bought a thin balaclava motorcyclists wear under their crash helmets.

I found the cheap neoprene hats made a world of difference, some cheap thermal stuff doesn't work all that well but these really do the job. Though if your feeling cold already you might want a full balaclava in a few weeks.

i found the same problem with ordinary helmets cold wet head so i got a casco helmet with ear flaps for the winter, a bit expensive but a toasty head hope this helps windycycle

I used a cheap fleece ski balaclava from Decathlon last winter with Ski goggles on top and the helmet on top of that. It's not cold enough for that yet but when it gets really cold it's a life saving (or should that be face saving?) combination!

Hi Caph,
I agree with NRG. I use a thin fleece lined scull cap bought from Wiggle under my helmet and it is amazing doing a much better job than you might expect when looking at it. It pulls down over my ears and really keeps wind chill out with the helmet chin straps holding it down around the ears.
Apart from this I also have a waterproof sort of hi-Viz cover for my helmet which is brilliant at keeping your head dry and keeping your own head warmth in!!
I really recommend both types of head gear having used them all through last winter while commuting to work.
I used both this morning when going to work at 6-30am across the Somerset levels.
