“Our results demonstrate that a single stripe of white paint does not provide a safe space for people who ride bikes,” Dr Beck said.

“When the cyclist and driver share a lane, the driver is required to perform an overtaking manoeuvre. This is in contrast to roads with a marked bicycle lane, where the driver is not required to overtake. This suggests that there less of a conscious requirement for drivers to provide additional passing distance.”

Those council painted white line and little else to say they have provided a cycle lane are unfit for purpose at best and actually quite dangerous.

If the government thinks they are safe, how about a swap to test that?

Have a three month trial in law, that when there are these bike lanes, cyclists must use the pavements and pedestrians use the cycle lanes.

Then go by the reactions to that from pedestrians to decide future policy.

How sad. Maybe a red or yellow line might have been more effective? I personally prefer red myself.

On my bike I have that special extra, the reflector on an arm, out to the side......

And it could easily be extended!

I have thought of adding a screw on the outermost side, one with a very "rough" head, so that if anyone actually touches it with their car, it leaves a light scratch! But it has not needed to be either extended, or "armed", cars simply avoid me like the plague!!

Just a possible alternative!!

For a child, I would add a flexible mast and a flag as well.

What do you think?

I think that the only safe way for a car etc to overtake a cycle is on the other side of the road. i.e. wait for a gap in traffic then pull over to the oncoming lane, but these days very few like to wait even those few seconds to carry a safe manoeuvre.
