You have to be careful with the electronics on the handlebars when you turn the bike upside down they can be vunerable to damage. So many people/bikeshops advise not to do it. Just using a couple of blocks under the grips is usually enough to keep things clear of the ground.

Bar ends are a useful addition, even if not used much for riding they prevent damage and make for a solid three point base.
