Well I had a very positive encounter today with a fully lycra clad roadie. I passed him and then he tuck right in behind me for about 2 miles until i got to a traffic light.

He came next to me and asked about the bike. When I told him it was electric he laughed and said thank god for that

He said he'd spent the last two miles berating himself for barley being able to keep up with someone on upright positioned hybrid, no clips, no areodynamics and a big old rucksack. And how odd it is he sees so few of them - he said he knew lots of hardcore sports cyclist who would switch to bikes for their commutes if it wasnt so hard in terms of excerise i.e they might want to do milage at the weekends for sport but not to have to do 15 miles each way for a commute

We cycled together for about a mile discussing cycling generally, the brilliance of pedelecs for commuting specifically.

He shook my hand, wished me a good day and headed off.

always a pleasure to meet a geniunely nice person - made a great start to the day

Never get this sort of experience in a car, bus or train !

Excellent !

Nice to hear that other people think the same way about some things... :)

Good to hear. I've had similar experiences in my North Downs area, but it's always with the really serious roadies, some of them professional riders doing their training runs.

The ones who are unfriendly are usually the weekend wannabees with their expensive helmets, dark goggles and intensely serious expressions saying "look how good I am".

On the segment below I'm in 1419th place on a fairly light racing bike with me trying my very best. On my e-bike I've managed to get 1st place KOM beating Rapha condor JLT racing cycling Richard Handley by a couple of seconds!
But you also need to take into account that your eBike will be around 20kg+ in weight while the road bike (if professional) is only about 5kg. My fastest times are still on my road bike because my eBike only helps me up to 15.5 mph and I have to put a lot of effort in to get near the speed of my road bike.

My bike is nothing like as light, more around 10kg. on that segment I imagine your e-bike would be fastest for you, unless of course you can ride it above 16 mph unassisted. It sounds like your e-bike isn't very good.

I'll be in Brighton in April for the Brighton Music Conference, you may have to point out the hot spots for me! (or the places a straight 40 something should avoid)

I've lived in or around Brighton for the past 48 years.

Gay, straight, non brits or whoever you are, you will be welcome in most places, that is why so many from all walks of life visit Brighton.

SRS, have you watched or taken part in the Brighton Big Dog MTB race?

I'd never heard of it until a couple of days ago. I was searching for other events to enter, and that came up.

As you have been in Brighton for that length of time, you must have had your haircut at least once in Freddies. All best people had their flat tops cut there. :)

I wasn't having a knock, SRS, just being a bit tongue in cheek 'regionalist' as jackhandy would say;)

Hi Eddie

Nope, never watched or taken part in Big Dog, had some mtb mates years ago, think they took part. Stanmer Park, I believe.

Not into racing myself, spend my working days competing hard for business.
Come leisure time, I can go at a pretty reasonable pace when I choose.
Mostly I ride at whatever pace I feel like on the day. My way of chilling.

As for the hair, diy and have done since I can remember. Not tight, just convenient and quick.

I work at the local Hospital, and a LOT of people see my bike and comment - they think it's awesome - especially when they ask where I live and realise the hills I cross.

This week (besides breaking 2 spokes) I've passed 4 teens, walking their bikes up a hill heading to the Mountain Bike Park I live next door to AND reached the point where I've lost 20KG since Christmas, racked up 750 miles at an average of 14.5MPH (the hills, remember!) anad have saved NZ$300 (150 pounds) in fuel - almost enough to pay for all the bike parts I've ordered! :D

Shame I'm not bringing my bike with me to Brighton!

Back on topic, at work I was told by one of the managers that saw me chaining up my bike " So why are they not classed as a scooter? And why do you not need a licence or insurance? It's not fair". Stop complaining and get on your bike she was told.
