Hi Guys

I know this has been asked previously but it doesn't quite answer my questions (but quite possibly because I am not understanding correctly).

I have the 48v 11.4ah eclipse bikes battery and am looking at charging this off a UPS system (uninterupted power supply). Their real use is for making sure computers/servers dont turn off when there is a power failure. I am planning to have mine connected to my house in the day and charge its batteries (24v bank likely to be around 100ah) via my solar panels on my house roof. Then at night when I get home charge my bike off the batteries. The idea being that its then completely free and green, powered transport.

UPS systems have pure sine wave inverters as they are designed for computers and the models I am looking at are 24v. So I plan to buy 2x 12v 100ah + batteries and run them in series.

Will this idea work in theory (or in practice if anyone else has thought of it!)

Cheers!

You are going to need a very big UPS. Cheaper and easier to have a second 48v 11.4ah battery that you charge directly during the day. A small UPS, cheaper than a second battery, will only run for a couple of hours.

The charger load will be well within the capacity of your solar panels, so you will still achieve your "green and free" objective.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking a 1000w UPS with non-working batteries can be had for £40 quite easily. Then 2x 12v deep cycle sealed 100ah batteries new can be picked up for £120, so £160 in total. The 2nd battery is £300.

Is it just a case that the UPS and battery bank is not a suitable set up?

OK so that is more clear - a broken UPS and some new larger batteries then...

You are still jumping through hoops, a second battery that you charge during the day, despite the extra cost, is a much better idea IMO. Even charging through the mains - £160 will buy you about 1,600 charges i.e. way over the life of most batteries. OK so you will be burning coal to charge it, talk to your local MP about getting Britain to migrate away from coal...

Remember he has solar panels, so the charging will be free, and he still gets his "Feed in Tarriff" income from the solar panel set. Also using a battery 1 day on bike, 1 day off bike, will reduce its stress and lengthen each individual life

But make sure you talk to your local MP, in the next day or so. They won't wanna know after that! ;)
