Changing The Battery on a Greenedge CS2

Hi Everyone

So let me list my skills for undertaking this type of task:



Right so with that out of the way. I recently bought a second hand Greenedge CS2 bike. It's been well used but also looks well looked after. Everything works however the catch at the top of the battery is broken and no longer clips in. Thus if you go over any bumps the battery has a habit of popping out - indeed over one large bump it completely fell off the bike. I have resolved this as a temporary measure by simply taping it down.

As it is clearly on the older side then I'm thinking it might be worth being ready to replace the battery. A good internet search didn't seem to find any of the actual battery, this one, available:


Allowing that this is described as "old style" just adds to my belief that I'm likely going to need to replace the battery anyway. I've found this battery on ebay which from the outputs etc would seem a suitable replacement:


But of course it has different connections etc. So in my rather long winded way what I am hoping for some guidance on is how difficult is it to replace the battery in this way, will I need a new controller as well, is this something a novice can undertake?

The battery is a standard part. You should be able to find it on Aliexpress for about £150 to £200.

Your controller is integrated in the base of the battery receiver, so to convert to a different style of battery is possible, but complicated.

Note that there are three or four similar but different types of bottle battery. Most have a flat bottom without the controller compartment, so are unsuitable. There are two types with the controller compartment. Your type comes off vertically and has two spring pins at the bottom. the other type comes off sideways and has 4 blade connectors at the bottom. I think you can transfer your controller over to that type, but not 100% sure.

If the battery works ok and you can get good miles using it then keep using it, ditch the tape and use some double sided Velcro or a buckled Velcro strap to retain said battery in place.

Or maybe a handy DIYer, can fabricate a replacement part, with welding if need be.
It cannot be that complicated!
Or adapt a fastening from a DIY shop, to do the same job.....
In stainless if possible.

Good solid advice, thanks - in fairness so far the battery seems to work fine - not been on huge rides but easily got 15 miles with what seems like plenty left (it's not easy to check with the way the controller works). I'm planning this weekend to try and take it to empty and see how many miles I get.

I've ordered the straps linked and will replace the tape as soon as they arrive. If I'm getting good mileage then I'll see if my engineer friend can create me something!

Thanks again - if it lasts long enough then I plan to upgrade once I know I will ride it enough, like the look of the woosh bikes - and the price tag.
