I use Bike Hut Wet Synthetic Lubricant, it seems to be very long lasting and does not wash off quickly in the wet. I clean the chain first with WD40, and then apply the lubricant carefully so all parts are covered.

The silicone spray seems a great idea though.

Years ago someone gave me a new can of GT85 which works like magic on hinges, keeping them quiet for years. It's just a very volatile fluid carrying PTFE, the fluid evaporates leaving the PTFE in place.

I've never tried it on anything else but don't suppose it would be much good in higher stress situations.

GT85 is really good for cleaning car interiors - all the plastic dashboard bits.
