Chain links

Hi all , could someone tell me if you peen the pin over on a cycle chain link when replacing the pin after chain length adjustment .
I recently replaced the chain on my bike and had to add 2 together , i peened the pins on the links , but have been told by someone at work that you don't need to peen cycle chain links when joining .

Thanks Wizard

No Wizard, it is not necessary to pein the ends of the pin, in fact doing so could make a tight link which would be difficult to rectify.

The pin should just protrude by an equal amount on both sides of the link. If the link is tight after inserting the pin the chain tool can be used in an alternative position to very slightly spread the link and eliminate the binding.
