Morning all, new to the forum.. I have been experiencing a few problems with my Trek Powerfly 2019 lately. What seems to happen is the chain has a lot of sag/rattle shall we say and the chain manages to get caught on the front chain ring whilst going round on its self causing the crank to lock up. This seems to happen the most when riding along rough and muddy/wet terrain whilst out this morning it was happening hell of a lot to the point where I couldn't really get out of first gear. Later on in the ride the chain actually snapped and now I am in need of a new chain. Im hoping that the chain was actually damaged causing this to happen an when fitting a new one will result in the problem not happening again. As anyone else experienced this? sorry for no photographs.

kind regards

Google 'chain suck' for Bosch CX motors.
You don't say how much mileage the old chain had. Its possible it could just be chain wear, however you might find that even with a new chain (sometimes, it only manifests itself WHEN you put a new chain on...) you'll still get in, in which case you'll need to replace the small front drive ring on the motor.

If it was chain suck, and it was caused simply by muddy conditions, then someone else will be needed to help remedy this particular issue as I've not suffered from that scenario.
However at only 200 miles, then dunno. Sounds as if you might have had a damaged chain? (or derailleur tension issue?) you said it had a lot of sag/rattle. I guess it might have stretched a lot if you use it through mud/sand and blast in turbo and/or don't clean/lube the drivechain regularly?

For me, the chain suck has manifested itself after a few thousand miles when the cog teeth get worn (even though they often look perfectly fine) and then you put a new chain on.

I’ve dropped it off back with Evans they are going to strip it down an take a look and apply a new chain it is a relatively rubbish design on this Bosch model, it is washed an clean after every ride an re lubed, never happens when road riding though, it’s more of an annoyance that anything :(

get them to remove the sprocket guard and just use a normal lock ring and i bet it will totally go away others have had the same problem with the sprocket guard and chain suck.

never had it on my bosch bike but i bet thats ur problem.;)

Yes that looks a lot better although more open to the elements I think it may be less prone to debris an mud to get caught up. I have just tried calling the shop but no answer I will try again in the morning, I just want a hassle free weekend ride.. I’m currently asking myself how can I hsve a mountain bike that doesn’t like to ride in anything other then dry road riding lol

if you look i had to make the guard wider on the small ses wheel as all it did was strip the chain of lube and cover it in crap.

the guard you have has the lock ring built in to it why you will nee a normal lock ring.

I,ve been in enough mud to stop me pedaling but the only time I have had chain suck is when the front sprocket has been worn. Although I know others on here have had the problem caused by mud.
If, as you say, your chain is rattling you could make sure that the clutch in the rear mech is on ( if it has one ). This will tension the chain. The chain could also be too long but this is unlikely if it is new from Trek.

I don’t think there’s hsve a clutch built in an sadly Evans don’t stock a 9 speed clutch either, I think they start at 10.. I can only assume the chain has had some damage or not been tensioned correctly I have had a new chain fitted so will see what happens with this one.. fingers crossed
