Carrera E replacement.

I currently have 2 Carrera-E's, one for me and one for the Mrs.

We have been very pleased with them and they are a great bike for the money.

I still have my Specialised Crosstrail disk, which I would like to convert as I don't want to sell it and am running out of room for all the bikes, kids bikes included.

If possible , I would like to convert the Specialised by using a rear hub 700c kit that has at least the power of the Carrera bike ( never felt like the Carrera E needed more power, but a little more top speed would be good) and be relatively lightweight and not bulky and be within UK regs or at least labelled as such!

Any pointers and what would such a kit cost all in?

The kit that I have is difficult to beat. It's fairly efficient, gives loads of torque if you need it, will cruise in the mid 20s, is totally silent and very reliable.. The only downside is that you can't get it as a complete kit from one supplier.

The motor is a 201 rpm 36v Q128C from BMSBattery, which I run at 48v. It's the same as the 328 rpm 48v version in all respects apart from the label.

The controller is a 14 amp sinewave Kunteng one from Aliexpress. The 17A or 20A one from PSWPower would be better if you're on the heavy side. It's paired with a KT LCD3

I have a 48v 11.6Ah Dolphin battery from BMSBattery, but you can use any 48v battery you want, though I'd go for branded cells.

Chose a PAS and throttle from BMSB or with the controller from PSWPower.

The motor was about £200, the controller/lcd about £50 and the battery about £300, so £600 maximum for everything to get ebike nirvana.

For legal 250w kit then Woosh bikes though requires freewheel.

The Yose hub offerings from YSBattery or Elifeshop on ebay are similar to the Q128, no duty to pay as in German warehouse.

Very few kits are marked 250w only a few, Woosh 48v SWX02 freewheel kit likely the fastest and most powerful but you will void warranty if you derestrict.

Q128c is 500w rated and nearly $300 with shipping and about £25 this side for duty, then you need to add a controller/lcd etc.

201rpm 36v attains 19mph or so at 20a and is about the same as my 201rpm BPM.

Nearer home and as cheap with less hassle are the German sourced China Yose kits, though might be a bit wanting with only a 15a controller, though capable of seeing 520/540ish watts in PAS5.

Only draw back is the moulded easy fit wiring means changing over controller or sourcing one the main problem as they tend to only come with kits. A shunt solder mod can raise the amp value by a few more.

That's wildly off. It's £215 with shipping. Alternatively, you can buy just the motor and build it yourself, whuch works out much cheaper.

That's the crux of the matter, if you are able to lace and true your own wheels then a bare motor is ideal.

Need to find a LBS who will do it but expect £75 maybe.

14g spokes will do the job.

If you hunt around, you can probably find one for about £15. Spokes will be about £20 and if you get someone else to build it, that would be £20 to £60 depending on whether it's a rip-off shop. Some shops don't like doing motor wheels because the axle doesn't fit their jigs.

That one might be disc brake only. It's not clear in the photo and doesn't say in the description, so you need to check with the seller.

Noload speed is about 24mph. Standard parts include LCD with 5 assist levels, sensored brake levers,left or right side PAS, thumb throttle.

Choice of battery, 13AH (about 40 miles range), 15AH or 17AH.

yes, we have 6, 7 and 8-speed freewheels , £10.

Rack battery: only 13AH and 15AH, 17AH arriving March, rear rack: £25.

They seem like good options. I could lace if myself with the help of YouTube and then take the along somewhere to have the wheel trued.

Which is the dolphin battery you recommend at BMS? Thought it would be best to order the 2 together to save on postage.

I see they do 48v batteries with inbuilt controllers. Would be a neater job without a separate controller. Any thoughts?

ERD is the Effective rim diameter measured across the rim from the end of one nipple to the opposite one.

All rims have a different measurement typically a 700c rim will be approx. 600mm +/- 5mm.

So until you receive your rim you can't order spokes, some rims provide the ERD which you can double check.

Two options to measure ERD.

1. Measure internal rim in a couple of places then add 4mm (2 x 2mm) for the rim/nipple seat thickness.

2. Measure the length of two cut down spokes with nipples, insert them opposite each other in to the rim and measure the gap between the spoke ends then add all three measurement together to get the ERD.

Using an online spoke length calculator put in the required details to get spoke length round up or down to the nearest mm. For a cross pattern go 1x or 2x max. 1x usually gives perfect nipple angle, 2x is acceptable though spoke entry at nipple can be a degree or two out.

Any double wall 36h rim should be suitable for disc & Q128c, though you need to check hole drilling compatibility if you use tubes Presta or Schrader.

Again any spoke make will work look for 14g 2mm double butted spokes. Sapim or DT Swiss are often the better ones but other makes will be fine.

You should order 14g spokes. As said, the legth depends on your rim's ERD.

I had the dolphin battery with Panasonic cells, now it's relatively expensive compared with those offered by Eclpse Bikes that have better cells.

The ones with co trollers in are easy to install, but harder to test if anything goes wrong. Also, the wires are too long , so you have to find a way to lose the surplus wire.
