Carrera Crossfuse loose bolt

Only have this Carrera Crossfuse three weeks today. After my first good ride because of weather . Was about a mile from home when a squeaking noise started to come form pedal crank. I feared the worst. Thinking it had done in a bearing.

Anyway took it to Halford and the guys was very quick to spot that a bolt had come loose, from the crank chain ring. This was rubbing on the guard . He had to remove the pedal crank to tighten it and put some blue thread locker on the bolts.

Job done. Still pleased with the bike. But if there going to be a fault ill get it. WHY me!

Now when I think about it, when I was reading all I could about this Bike, I did come across tread . But cant find it now, where some other guy had this bolt come loose. So looks like its not a one off. Thing is you cant check them as there behind that black guard.

I seem to remember a thread about this as well, may well check mine out in the morning. What mileage have you done so far?

Its only done 50 miles. You will be okay. If theres a faulty one I get it

I have only done 35 mls so far in the last 2 days but will probably have a look, if I remember rightly the thread said there were 3 bolts is that right?

Not sure how many the Halfords guy just said he check the others and put on some thread lock. So I don't aspect this to happen again.

Depends if he removed the other bolts as he should of, and thread locked them too, you will soon find out. This is the sort of job I would do myself and think nothing else of it, but for some, like yourself, it's not what you expect after 50 miles on your new bike, and as I'm sure Halfaurds are aware of the issue, should be carring out on the PDI of every Crossfuse.

I wrote the other thread. Yes two of the 3 bolts were coming unwound but only one was scraping on the guard. I'm sure the Halfords guy would threadlock all 3 bolts if he's gone to the trouble of pulling the pedal crank apart. Mine has been fine since.

Anyone buying one new should perhaps ask Halfords to do this as part of their PDI. Won't take them long and should avoid problems out on a ride.

You would hope so Mike, but with the long running Crossfire/Vulcan saga and the variable branch to branch service people seem to encounter with them, I wouldn't put money on it, would you? They deff. seem to have a "get it out the door, deal with any problems if/when they happen" policy, but I guess that's how most big retailers operate these days.

Yes I hope he did. I did say to him when I came back in to collect it. Did you check the other bolts as well. (Yeah he said) But for some reason the way he said it. I don’t believe him. Time well tell.

Hello guys you can just see the bolts. If you look down from the battery key side and turn the crank. I count 4 flat headed round bolts. One on each of the four crank arms. Here you can see two off them in photo.

Hi all, I have exactly the same problem, only the pedals won't turn any more as the loose bolt is too far out. Do you know what size allen key I need to take off the pedal arm and get to the chain guard? Thanks.

Hello I had to take it back to Halfords. As you need to take the pedal crank off to get at the bolts. So sorry know idea off key size. They done it for free but, as bike was only new.

The allen key only takes out the bolt. you need a crank-puller to get the chainwheel off. Make sure that the end that pushes on the square end of the bottom bracket spindle is the right size.
